Altezza(RS200z) engine info?

Postby barryogen » Thu Apr 17, 2008 1:44 pm

Having just bought a nice tidy example of one of these,
http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/toyota/altezza/2001_5/560/ in white, with a bunch of goodies included(TRD kit, TRD mags, TRD exhaust, Apexi Power FC and controller and more)

I've been trying to read up on the engine, GB, etc, but I'm finding it hard to find any useful info.

Most places seem to suggest looking at Altezza/Lexus forums, which have all sorts of info on the 6 cyl, and invariably on the 1jz/2jz swaps...

Things I know
It's a 3sge BEAMS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_3S-GE

Unlike the rest of the 3sge's it is an interference engine.

The RS200 has the second version of the Gen 4, with VVTi on intake and exhaust.

Things I'd like to know...
Compression ratio.
Known issues.
Known limits.
General engine info.

So, anyone got some resources that they are holding out on?

Off the top of my head.

compression= 11.5:1 8O

Head from a manual car is different to the head from an automatic car. manual head has 6 caps on the intake cam as opposed to 5 on the automatic one.

MAF sensors in the intake tend to get dirty very easily when aftermarket airfilters are used, which causes all sorts of hesitance when operating the car.

If you disconnect the battery, you must let it idle for at least 10 mins. if you turn the car off before that, or start driving the car, then it will stall when you come to idle (at a stop sign or something) also will run rich (backfire at high rpm gear shifting) and your fuel economy goes out the window.

Coil packs are prone to failure if you don't keep an eye on the condition of your spark plugs. The coils themselves are individual and sit on top of each cylinder. Last i checked it was around $800ish rrp for a new coil pack

Crank is of the same specification as earlier gen 3sge's. the rods are also the same length, and share the same bearing measurements at both ends. The cylinder hemisphere in the is alot smaller in capacity than others (will find exact capacity later.

I think I've got a translated owners and also engine manual kicking around somewhere. Has a bit of interesting info in it. Mostly around assembly/disassembly of engine. Also have a full one in parts that i'm slowly building up, so can share what little info i do have.

The guy who knows the most about them that i know of is a guy who floats around here and also altezzaclub by the handle Celica_RA45 (?). he knows far too much to be healthy

all handy to know.
I thought the compression ratio was 11.5, maybe the wikipedia article had 11.1 for previous versions.

I had noted that the redline and max HP were different for the auto and manual. Apparently the cams are different, in both lift and duration.

Revhead had already warned me about pod filters :)

The idle after ECU reset(battery disconnect) is an interesting one, I guess it must have to do some calibrating of sensors.

regarding the coil packs and spark plug conditions, is there anything you can do except keep your eye on them, as in colder/hotter temp plugs, or is it just a case of actual maintainence?

Am very keen on that.

will keep my eye out for the other dude.

Yes there is a difference in HP between auto and manual, i'm sure there is something in the cams (as there wouldnt be a difference in the caps for no reason), but never had auto vs manual ones spec'd to know for sure. Some also theorize that there are differences in the ECU that attribute to the power difference.

Also the manual head has titanium valves. however i cant remember off the top of my head if it is the exhaust or intake side.

MAF sensor issues are not limited to Pod filters either. panel filters do the same. just not as fast. easily fixed by cleaning sensor with electrical contact cleaner.

re: coil packs, its just a case of actual maintenance, and using the right type and heatrange of plugs (iridium, not copper ones!)

Ecu reset baffled me at first as i have never seen anything like it in any other cars, so must just be some kinda of, as you say, sensor calibration.

Will have to find a scanner for manuals as they are both on paper.

Check out the results of a tuned Apexi PowerFC, air filter, some HKS Extractors and a 2.5 inch exhaust on RS200 Altezza. 145kw at the wheels, not bad.

viewtopic.php?t=61660&highlight=

Originally 117 kw at the wheels, with some air filter problems.
Good gains for a N/A car.

Does anyone know if this is the case with most cars? I.E. similar scenario to things I am experiencing in Celica.

Interesting indeed. I have email NZEFI about booking in for a tune, they said they were fairly busy(fully booked) for the next ~2-3 months... but I can wait, the car is going fine as is.

I was told the same when it came to my RunX with the 2zz... it did seem to effect fuel economy for the first few tanks if you didn't let it idle for a bit after re-connecting it. Maybe just for fairly late model ones?

Good man nzefi will get it fair banging for you :P

They are imo some of the best in nz for tuning, only wish they worked outta auckland

Don't know much more than what has already been said, from memory the titanium valves are intake and sodium filled valves on exhaust side.. Fitting a dry sump system to mine which is going into a lotus 7 replica. I have the engine manual mentioned , good for torque values and alignment marks etc.. And a couple of pdf's on the ecu pin outs..

I am interested results and experience you get nzefi when you get your power fc tuned, I am might go to a power fc on my car when its finished - and would need a place in chch to tune it..

Almost every single one we had going flat, needed throttle body and MAF sensor cleaned to make it idle properly.
The cleaning also helps with torque, as they develop flat spots (due to gunk on the heaters/resistors inside MAF)

mine had a massive flat spot in midrange torque from just a pod filter, the MAF sensors are very sensitive.
A good tune does the trick :)

To answer my own question:

NO.

Nothing quite like the practical test to see if it works. Maybe for an altezza/RS200, but not 1989 Celica :)
