Diesel 2LT modifications

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Tue Apr 22, 2008 3:59 pm

Don't think I've ever seen a diesel tech question here before lol...

Anyway, looking at getting a cheap 4wd to try out 4wding. Either a 70 series Landcruiser or a early Surf with 2LT diesel.

Now these 2LT diesels suffer from over heating and cracking the head, I've read that fitting a 2.5" exhaust helps with extracting some heat and a little bit of performance.

But what about fitting an intercooler, such as a standard 4agze cooler but front mounted? Surely this should give a some sort of increase in power (Not a heck of a lot, since they are a ball breaking 60kw's out of the box (!) and also keep the temps down.

Has anyone ever stuffed around with these old diesels? Will they handle having an intercooler fitted without changing fueling? And if so will they handle a couple of pounds more boost?

If it blows up i'd look at fitting a 5 or 7mge.

Or just go straight for a landcruiser 3.4diesel.

Any thoughts?

Cheap, easy and bang for buck. The 5m and 7m will fit the standard mounts and they also fit the w5* with correct bellhousing.

7mge has 200hp vs the 80ish of the 2lt.

Sounds good to me. 8)

By time you go to effort to find good conditon m series motor, and correct bell would proberly cheaper to have purchase jz series motor, and bell, and have reliabilty and more power, plus plently of people have done the jz to surf/hilux conversion's before, think there is company on trade me who sell mounts for conversion

I jsut don't see point in using m series sftuff, when the n/a jz series stuff is so cheap, proberly best person to tlak to would be the guy with green rx7 as his avatar, or jzx81

Im jsut not a big fan of using old technolgy when new stuff is jsut as cheap if not cheaper

Plus a blown head gaskit in the middle of nowhere would not be cool

Yep, the 2LT will would love to snuggle up in the engine bay with an intercooler. Fueling is uber easy to adjust - its a screw on the pump. If your keen you can try adding a bit of timing on the pump too.

Get something with a 1kz in it (kzn130 should be cheap enough by now).

2LT are old and crap :) Plus I can get 1kz gear cheap as now

sure the 2lt is junk but if you want to try and make it last the downpipe off the turbo is what holds them back, it's so restrictive that it builds up excessive heat in the turbo which is transferred to the head, this is what causes the heads to crack.
good luck with the 4x4 they are a lot of fun if you can find somewhere to use them.
(make sure you keep som money aside for decent 4x4 tyres otherwise you won't be going far offroad :( )

yeah man iv just recently brought a LN61 and man its fun, slow as hell but fun lol.

iv been thinking about fitting a SC14 as my turb squeals but the budget aint stretching that far at the mo. ill def do the exhaust soon tho.

and trade me is your friend when it comes to 4wd tires etc i got 4 tires all with good tread and 4 mangel wheels for like $400.

go for a minimum of 33" tires to as with my 31" the diffs are too low and it bottoms out pretty easy (IFS)

The reason for going with a ln61 surf is because they are cheap, plentiful and disposable. I was originally looking at a turbo (aftermarket AXT kit) SWB Safari which was a torque monster but needed too much work so let it go because the seller wouldn't drop their price.

Also since the canopy can be removed it'd be handy to transport things etc. Maybe even modify the fibreglass roof to fit a dirt bike.

JustinSpiderholden - The JZ idea is true, since the mounts would be included in the cert cost anyway but I've had a read of an article about the 5mge conversion and it looks so easy its not funny (plus DIY projects are always fun). Particularly the wiring, which is not my strong point. Its about the only thing I leave up to a pro when it comes to modifying my cars. More power and reliability is always better but this will be a budget project...else i'd be fitting a 1UZ with a big ole eaton on top!

Skin: yeah a 1kz would be nice but more then i want to spend if I buy the truck that goes with it. Plus I wouldn't be as likely to drive through stuff with it since it'd be a more expensive truck. I want a truck that I can dent and abuse offroad ! :P

Stu- thats good to know that its relatively easy to adjust fueling. Would be good to be able to pull a few extra kw's out of it.

mjrstar - I've done a bit of research into areas so go here in wgtn and it looks good, especially if I join a local 4wd club.

Slightly offtopic but another option is a dirty old 3.8 v6 holden conversion which is quite common in 4wd's.... *puts on flame suit*

Would be cool but conversion cost is pretty high.
ie
custom bellhousing
custom flywheel and clutch
wiring
mounts
cert

etc etc

Drive in drive out cost is usually around $10k.

From what ive heard fix the exaust downpipe issue and fit a intercooler and it takes away most of the issues with the heads etc

Oviously have the radiator rodded out and good antifreeze etc and checking the viscus fan is always a good idea to if its done 200 whatever kms, alot of turning, check the valve replace the oil, also brings me to remember if you end up getting a auto one (i know proberly not for 4x4ing) but the auto coolers in the radiators block off 2/3rds of the water flow out of the radiator at the bottom...not good, remove it and fit a aftermarket tranny cooler and your sweet

Hey and M series motors arnt bad motors...9 times out of 10 the problem with the motor is the owner or the prevous owners, but thats a rant for another day

really? i was told by a reputal engine reconditioner they run waterjackets between the valve seats and thats primary cause for them cracking.

Ive fitted new heads to 2LTs and theyve been back within 3months with same problem. They are just shi**ers!.

as for 2lte, sc14 and i/c would work very very well
just dont keep the boost under 10 psi or so or you push out the pre comp chambers

Honestly couldnt say for certain, but the downpipe problem does make sense aswell, cos I never seen n/a 2Ls have issues with heads.
