Interior questions

Postby solitaire » Sat May 03, 2008 6:00 pm

Im ripping out the carpet in my sw20 to look for rust (its a targa).

On the floor under the carpet and underlay there is a thin layer of plastic that has been glued to the floor... its quite brittle and can be smashed with a hammer but a real drama to get off...

Any tips from anyone for getting it off? Anyone know what its purpose is?

Once its off is there any particular paint i should use on the floor? or is por15 fine?

Also, as a side question, wheres a good place to get a reasonable deal on underlay? Do i just go to carpet court or is there flame retardant automotive underlay i should be getting?

hope this question makes sense... i cant think of a better way to explain it.

It's not plastic, it's sound deadening tar.

Best way to get it off in my experience is wait till its cold and goes brittle, then smash it off with a chisel/screwdriver/whatever.

POR15 will be sweet, so long as you're not planning on having flash floods come through your car or something. :P

I found that it didnt actually make any difference to the noise level of the car, (road noise that is) a mate was pissed off that my car was quieter than his, which he'd put KGs and KGs of extra sound deadening into.

Dry ice is definately FTW for removing sound deadening. Leave it on there til you hear it start cracking, then get a scraper and lift it off in a big chunk :D

where do ya get dry ice from?

por15 is good for floors, hard enough to wear well.

MMM good question... i read somewhere that dry ice was toxic to breath the fumes? or am i talking crap?

Might be worth the risk though... its a bloody nightmare to get that tar crap off

Yup, you get dry ice from BOC, or possibly any other gas supplier.
Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide, so yeah, breathing in lots of it probably will not be good for you, so dont sit inside the car with the doors closed and windows up when you use it

Ah right... the garage is below the house and the only thing separating the upstairs from the garage is a wooden floor... If i go to bed and forget to turn off the garage lights the light can be seen through the floor... am i likely to gas my wife do you think?

Not likely, you'd only use 2 or 3kg's tops to do an SW I'd imagine...it'd disperse pretty quickly in that sort of area.

I used a bottle of Co2 welding gas, just "poured" it onto the area for a few seconds, then i tapped it and it just all broke apart and came out easy as...

You're not going to gas anyone, its heavier than air anyway.

Can handle it with your hands if you're quick, though it'll burn a little bit if you hold onto it for any length of time.

When you have some left over, half fill your sink up with warm water and a generous amount of dishwashing liquid mixed in, chuck a decent scoop of dry ice in

You obviously know that you will be dramatically increasing road noise by removing the sound deadening.
I was stupid enough to use a heat gun to remove it from my rally car. Took forever and I baked a thin layer to the floor. That I had to remove with a generous helping of fuel. Definately try any other method before heating.

Hey Mate - Yeah i am aware - thankyou for mentioning it though. Im not removing it to save weight or anything like that. But its a leaky targa and i can see evidence of water running under the sound deadening stuff so i want to get under it to make sure there is no rust.

Would quite happily re-deaden it afterwards but i doubt anyone sells it? Probably not much of a market for it.

Another question... interior wise...

I have ripped out the dash and there is a big bar going across the dash, definitely there for structural integrity.

It has a light layer of rust on it, as in you can still tell its silver but its quite obviously orange as well. Should i be worried? Should i just fish oil it? what do you guys like to do in this situation?

Don't be worried about it (Unless it actually has proper rust in it!), don't fishoil it though, that stuff smells like arse!
