shuddering wiper blade

Postby barryogen » Sun May 11, 2008 10:33 pm

The drivers side wiper on my Altezza bounces on the upstroke, but is fine on the down.

I've got a spare set of the rubber blades that I'm going to put in it anyway, but just wondered if anyone had any suggestion on fixing it?

The hooks on the wiper arm you run the wiper blade through bend with time, it makes the wiper bounce when its coming back up. Can buy new ones for like $20.

I must play devils advocate!

I've used rainx for years. I love the stuff. In any decent rain it's awesome! At 100kph in HEAVY rain you could a-l-m-o-s-t get away with no wipers at all!
Of course there is a downside...
That light annoying misty rain... yeah... rainx makes that even more annoying than it is... At least that's my opinion...

Oh and avoid Fogx (name??) unless you're willing to religiously re-apply it during winter...

rainx rules them all. Apart from prestone rain repelent which I used to use but can't find anymore  it was even better than rainx. Also avoid the rainx wiper fluid additive, it is shitebiscuits.

If you get silicone wiper blades it seems to make the rainx last longer as well.

And at anything over about 80km/h I never need wipers (a good pair of driving glasses helps with this).

I find I don't have a problem with the wiper fluid additive, but then I do rub it over the windscreen everytime after i wash the car, so that may help.
I use the stuff on the side windows too & find side visibility in the rain way improved

It could also be something as simple as you have waxed your windscreen.

That may make sense... will give it a good scrubbing with hot water, buy some rainx, and swap the blades... that way I can be sure that one of them fixed it

I've found the washer additive to be good.
Then again.. I don't wash my car... But I haven't had to re-apply rainx in quite some time now, and it seems to still be there...
Oh and yeah... I do drive in the rain..

well rainx has all but solved it, the shudder is still there, but very minimal, will put some new blades on it and see where I go from there.

For a laugh I applied it to just the drivers side of the mrs car, and dear god it does make a very noticable difference, thoroughly recommend it to anyone, oh, and have since applied to the other side too.

I've found the silcon type blades seem to be nicer than the rubber type ones

With rubber wiper blades, you can get two types (aside form narrow and wide).

You can get ones made by extruding them through a jig, or you can get ones that had the rubber moulded into the right shape.

The extruded ones are generally cheap and nasty ~$10 a pair
The moulded ones are awesome, don't know how much they cost though.

I have moulded Wurth blades (no rainx, but will do now) and with bars bugs washer additive, my windscreen is mint (where my wipers wipe anyway).

Probably just build-up on the windscreen, the best thing i have found is an electric buffer and some fairly smooth buffing compound, nothing left on there after that.. shuddering wipers seem to get worse over time i think maybe a miniscule amount of rubber builds up on the windscreen after each shudder..
so:
1) buff (trial patch first)
2) chuck those new wiper blades on..

Nothing beats the genuine rubbers, if you still have the original blades and the metal inserts, go genuine. Best $10x2 you can spend on your car.

The complete blades with rubbers are about $50+ ea though, so not quite so good, but you will have no shudders after replacing them.
