3SGTE problems

Postby Boosted_162 » Tue May 13, 2008 10:17 pm

Well im just trying to get my ST185 running. Engine is from a 1989 ST185 with only 26000km. Now the engine starts fine, and idles fine. Just after 10 seconds or so, something cuts it and it will stop running. I can actually keep it going tho with acceleration, but its not just a stall, something is definately shutting it off. Starts straight away. The TVIS isnt connected, neither is the VSV, or alternator.

Codes are 24 and 31. From what i see these are AFM/intake codes. Im using the AFM from the donor, but the strange thing is the car did this with the last motor and running a different AFM. Loom is standard '92 spec and is standard except for the AFM wiring having been extended by me. Is this the reason its bringing up codes? Or is this why it cuts out? Do i need to resolder everything to fix the problem?

Thanks :)

you need to find out if it looses spark injection or the fuel pump stops.

all it's needs for spark is Dist signals, ecu power and igniter circuit,

so if it looses spark, it has nothing to do with AFM etc etc.

If it looses fuel pump, look at two speed relay system, AFM switch etc etc.

Injection is harder as can be so many things.

Check resister packs.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

what happens if you hold the flap inside the afm open slightly? the 20v AFMs will turn off the fuel pump if they close entirely.

neat trick, set a 20v to 'on' but don't start the car, push the flap slightly and you can hear the fuel pump whirring away :D

Well after writing this i thought about the last time i tried to make it work with the old engine, so i made the fuel pump stay on (FP and +B) which amazingly....the car stayed running! So this narrows it down a hell of a lot...does this mean there is a leak that means the AFM isnt reading and switching the pump off? Where should i start my search?

Thanks

start by holding the AFM flap open a bit and see if the pump runs,

if it does, for some reason the AFM is closing, air leak or something,

If not, it a wiring issue,
or the pump sw in the AFM is faulty ( very unlikely unless it's been shorted out)

You could be missing an earth for the AFM. Had the same sort of problem when I fitted the 20v to my AW.

I can keep the car running by opening the afm....obviously this means that theres an airleak, but where should i start looking? Before the TB? Vaccum lines? The PS idle up isnt connected, but ive had them blocked up and doesnt change it.

If you smoke cigerettes, when its not running with the TB closed take in a big puff and blow it into the AFM/pipe. Keep doing it until you see smoke comming out somewhere and theres your leak.

If not. listen for hissing and start squeezing pipes and stuff to see if you can stop it. If you do have a vacuum leak it generally hisses pretty loud if its a small pipe. If its a big pipe its usually big enough for you to notice it not connected to anything.
