hunting at idle + stalling

not its not a toyota but i figured you guys would atleast have a bit of an idea .

ive got a 1993 mitsi lancer 1600cc injected wagon, factory as, anyway it started idling a little low the other day and then it started hunting(drops down to like 500rpm and then goes up to about 1000rpm) but every now and then it wont hold its idle at all and will stall.

since its started doing this ive change the dizzy cap and rotor, spark plugs and engine oil+ filter and gearbox oil and fuel filter.

is this the start of my airflow meter on its way out?

i havent check for any fault codes(cause i dont know where the plug is for it)

Yeah I would check for air/vacuum leaks, and also check level or bleed cooling system.

Mitsis quite well known for the stepper motor dying.

Had one a few weeks ago that got a random short internally (in the stepper motor) which blew one of the stepper motor control transistors in the ECU. New stepper motor didn't fix the problem and eventually it was down to ECU which did the trick. Problem was the short inside it happened about 2 weeks later and same symptom came back so needed the ECU fixed and a replacement stepper motor (second hand, new ones from Mitsi were $1300 )

So if ya get stuck and nothing else works then maybe find a second hand ECU to try





Or as above, air leaks give that symptom in a lot of makes of car. The idea with the cooling system is so the idle up bit (if it requires coolant) will operate properly, or so you're getting a proper reading at the temp sensor for the ECU

One of my friends has a Mitsi Mirage that recently had the same problem- didn't stall as it was an Auto, but the hunting was there. They're on a trip at the moment, but will be back on Tuesday- I will ask and see what the outcome was.

I remember the reading I did for them though- from the looks of it I was a common Mitsi problem, and between the diagnostics and various part replacements they went through, got pretty expensive (their going to local Pitstop didn't help much, but they didn't listen to me... )

the trouble is mitsis are so common for stepper motor problems that alot of places wont bother to diagnose properly, just chuck in a new one!
