Putting gearbox back on (FWD)

Postby xsspeed » Fri May 23, 2008 3:50 pm

Hey guys, I'm putting my gearbox back on the old 2e this weekend.

Will hopefully have it driveable by queens birthday so I can go get the rust done so i can get it out of the garage before i pull engines out of other cars in my driveway.

Anyway, life story aside, do I need to get rid of all the grease thats on the CVs before I re apply, and how much do I use? have grease but no gun atm, will I be sweet?

Should I bother replacing the boots? I'm not gunna use these driveshafts with the 4age obviously, just needed for a temp fix to get it going.

Also where do I lube on the gearbos input shaft? Just where the bearing slides or along the splined part as well? doing the latter doesnt seem right to me but the diagram I'm working with is a bit inconclusive.

Cheers guys,
Steve

Don't worry about the cv greaseif its just temp. The stuff thats on there will be fine.

Dont replace the boots unless they are missing.

Just lube where the bearing slides. Can lube the splined part a TINY bit if wanted, but not much or u will get it on the clutch disk. It might help it slide in easier (not that it should be hard..) I wouldn't though.

just grab a couple of boot kits off trademe, they seem to do the trick and while its all out, could be worth the little effort/$$$

you dont need a grease gun, my technique is to cut the corner off the packet of grease that comes with the CV boot, grab the CV in the other hand and stick the open corner down into the central hole, where the driveshaft would normally be. then squeeze and try and form a bit of a seal round the packet of grease.

this forces the grease through the CV and up out of the bearings - good way to get it all through it, and when this happens you can stop squeezing.

CV boot kits are cheap, if they are torn / missing i would replace them.

dont bother putting grease into the boot, it does nothing there :D

oh and i usually put a small amount of grease on the splined section, then work the clutch plate up and down it a couple of times, then wipe off excess around clutch boss / input shaft spline.
