ra70 celica - 21rc engine - air pump seized

Postby FXGTV » Tue Jun 03, 2008 3:30 pm

The air pump on my good old 21rc engine has died - well the pulley wheel is seized, which caused the belt to rub and then smoke. I have removed the suspect pump, but am now wondering what, if anything else i should replace while im replacing the air pump. Also, would a faulty air pump damage anything else at all?
It ended up being blessing in disguise as a good 10 cm section of the timing belt is worn down to 1/5 its normal size!!!!!

I'm never buying a car off a chick again!

Cheers in advance guys.

Hey guys. Has anyone ever changed over one of these pumps before?

They're also known as vacuum pumps and volution (sp?) pumps. I'm having a bit of trouble upon installing the new pump. Main problem at the moment are the tensioners..and then getting the belt back on, once the pump is bolted in place. (the belt gets in the way of the bolt that bolts through the tensioner bolt and into the pump itself).

At this stage any help at all would be great

It pumps air from one side of the air filter 'hat' back into the pump and then round to the other side of the 'hat'. Its on the same belt line as the ac.
Cheers for making this thread look at least a little loved.

fixed. The tensioners ended up being a real bitch, but once you work out which way round the bolts fit together its a piece of piss. So far its cost me nothing to fix 8) I'll post pics soon.
