Altezza Coils/plugs - WTF setup is this?

Postby barryogen » Tue Jun 03, 2008 5:23 pm

I'm avoiding some work and found some pics on photobucket....

Anyone know what this sort of setup is, and what advantage it would have?

I have heard that the Altezza can suffer from overheated coils if used in motorsport, or in boosted applications, so I assume that these are external coils of some sort to stop them from overheating?

They are the factory coils mounted externally on a swanky bracket with a plug lead shoved up its bum.

to do it? would require the leads and brackets obviously, and also probably lengthen each loom plug for the coil as they dont have alot of length from memory.

advantages - obviously reduce the heat that the coils are subjected to by sitting directly on the plug to prolong coil life. By how much i dont know. i dont personally plan on doing it.

Yep, Distrb got it on the button. Funnily enough that is actually a proper kit from Japan rather than a custom made one. I have seen a few identical kits now on street import Altezzas.
Good in theory of course, but I havent come across many yet with heat-failed coils. But a few years maybe and they will be like Nissan RB's??

Have seen it done to on a boosted motorsprt application,

the coils would not last with heat for the length of time,
as the car was an endurance race car.

They remote mounted them pretty much as above,

but in the end went away from those coils altogether.

Was a pretty extreme application though.

I've done quite a few coils now, normaly around the 120k mark if they have never had the plugs done.

The guy who owns that vehicle posted a thread about his coils on the Altezza club of NZ/Oz forums
