HD clutches & ABS brakes

Postby Adydas » Fri Jun 20, 2008 11:06 pm

Right guys, Anyone with experiance able to tell me what a HD clutch should feel like.. There is a very certain point in my clutch where i get a hurrendus shudder..

Imagine 0-10% nothing,10-20% shudders then 30-60% fine then 60 onwards the peddles travel is not felt ( totaly engadged/dissengadged ).

Is this normal i mean it feels "ok" but its just very random and nothing somthing that seems right allthough it causes no issues, holds well and drives fine etc.

My next question is what could the ABS light coming on at random times mean? under boost it seems its all to happy to pop on without any effect to the cars braking system at all..

The thing is i dont think the abs actually works..

my clutch shudders occasionally too, no idea why, I just hear about it being relatively common so I dont worry,

The only time my abs light has come on has been when Ive had issues with my alternator  go figure? lol

Shudder could be any number of things. Standard clutch plate in it? Fresh clutch or just started doing it recently out of the blue?

ABS light comes on with a fault in the system. There should be a code for it. If you're breaking traction on one wheel it can cause a huge speed difference between the speed sensors on each side and throw a code, or the wiring is dodgy somewhere, sensor playing up, ECU issue, pump problem etc

Easy enough to tell if its working. Go fast, stand on the brakes as hard as you can. If a wheel locks and stays locked then its not working and needs to be looked at

You'll get shudder from heavy duty clutches if you try to "ride" them. They're not designed to slip or be ridden. So when you ride them the shudder is the clutch gripping (like its supposed to) then letting go because the pressure plate is only touching a little, then gripping again, then slipping, etc etc

The Springs on the clutch plate are also a cause of this. With HD clutches, its not some to worry about, just drive so it doesn't do it :)

Well if it locks then your ABS isn't working. Would check the codes and see what you get. Pretty sure you can check those manually but you'd have to have a search around.

As for clutch, you'd have to take it out and have a decent look at it if its bad enough to bother you. Hot/hard spots on the flywheel, broken springs in the clutch plate etc. Gearbox popped straight on, wouldn't have had any chance of bending the clutch plate slightly?

Have to disagree there. You'll get shudder from button clutches, but replacement heavy duty ones are usually a standard plate with a heavier clamping pressure on the pressure plate. And they are fine to slip a bit, same as a standard clutch

My apologies. I shouldn't have assumed an HD clutch is just a high clamping pressure plate.
