wastegate not opening fully = problem??

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Tue Aug 26, 2008 10:10 pm

The rolla needs to be tuned soon and I've just noticed the wastegate is only opening about half way (on the basis that "fully open" is when its at 90º - at the moment it can only move around 45º if that makes sense).
reason being is the dump pipe isn't a huge work of art so it hits the flange.

the turbo is a s13 garrett t25, stock boost is 7psi. I'm wanting to occasionally up the boost to around 12psi - 14psi.
before I pull the dump pipe off and get the grinder and welder out, what are the chances it'll be ok as is once running higher boost?
it holds boost perfectly fine on 7psi, but for 12psi is it going to need to vent a huge amount more?

I have no idea how much the wastegate actually opens when venting - apart from the fact that the higher the boost, the more it opens.
can anyone be any more specific?

cheers

and please note - the above should not be read as "should I run an external wastegate or not?"

if its holding 7psi fine it should be fine

the lower the boost the more the wastegate has to vent,

as you raise the boost level the wastegate stays shut for longer.

a wastegate works by bypassing exhaust gas past the turbine so it doesnt spool as much
