Knob Air Intake Questions (3sgte)

Postby BZG Wagon » Thu Aug 28, 2008 9:59 pm

These are probably stupid questions - but it would be nice to have someone confirm what I am thinking:

1) Cleaning the AFM:
Is it just a matter of opening the valve at the front and spraying carb cleaner in it? Do I need to remove any of the other pipes? Do I need to wait for it to be 100% dry again before starting?

2) Oil in the turbo intake pipe?:
Am I correct in assuming this is oil blow back from the turbo? Haven't noticed any smoke or consumption of oil? Is this normal for a car thats done 115kms?

3) Cold Air Box:
I notice its sitting a little loose. I see there are rubber washers for vibrations etc underneath the bolts (red). Is it a good idea to give them a bit of a tighten (it doesn't sit tight; i.e. air can easilly get inside the hole.

Hope these questions aren't too painfully stupid for you :?

this is a caldina?

thats the recirc valve not the afm, caldinas are MAP sensored.

dont worry about the airbox as that side is only sucking unfiltered air.

and the oil in the intake doesnt look too bad but it s quite likely just from the pcv system.

1) That doesn't look like an AFM, more a factory recirculation valve?
2) Yeah, fairly normal for most cars, you get that particularly when you've got a crankcase breather, or factory BOV plumbed back to the intake. As well as dust and crap build up.. just pull it off the turbo and give it a good clean if you're worried.
3) That looks like the bottom of the airbox has the cold air intake, hence it wouldn't matter if it did leak, it would just go through the filter anyway. But it wouldn't hurt to tighten them, just don't overtighten them.

Yep its a caldina (st215).

I gave the 'recirc' valve a quick spray of carb cleaner on the inside anyway - shouldn't do it any harm?

So if I understand you correctly; the 3sgte doesn't have an AFM because pressure is monitored by an air intake sensor?

I normally make a habbit of cleaning the intake systems on my car every year. Is there anything specific I should look at apart from the obvious intake hoses, pcv, throttle body?

some 3sgtes have an AFM(st185 for example) which directly m,easures the amount of air coming into the engine.

the caldina 3sgte uses a MAP sensor(Manifold Absolute Pressure)
which measures the pressure in the intake manifold and uses the measured value and the RPM(and other correction factors) to inject the right amount of fuel.

clean the insides of the intercooler with diesel or what ever to degrease it.

Gets back some lost cooling from oil residue from what u saw in intake pipes

and to lessen the oil oin the before turbo intake pipe you can put a catch can between the PCV and the intake - that will keep things a little cleaner ..

And yes - the first pic is the recirc valve - or on easier terms - the factory Plumb back Blow off valve .. Its identical to whats on my st205 - as is the airbox arrangement by the looks of it ..

Looking at that you * may * and a big may * be able to use a st205 Apeci power intake on the caldina with minor bods - to give it a little more " boy racer noise * too :)

the factory BOV has quite abit of character when piped to that intake - its very sedate in the stock box

Stu!
