Bov question

Postby Chasermk2 » Sun Sep 07, 2008 2:12 pm

Hey guys quick question, will a cheap ( hks SSQV copy ) Bov make an engine run quite rough at idle, and stall really easy. sometimes it stalls randomly with my foot on the clutch. mostly when the engine is cold but sometimes when its hot as well.

Depends on the type of car / setup.. If you install an atmosphecicly venting BOV onto a car that requires a recirulating one then it will effect the cars tuneing / running and could cause stalling and a bad idle..

Whats the car? motor? what was there before hand? did it "plumb back" into the intake? If so does the new BOV plumb back?

the motor is a 4agte running ems stinger ecu, so no it didnt have a bov previously.
and yes it is venting into atmo

Is the engine running an AFM? (not sure what 4AGE/ZE you used, or if stinger got rid of AFM)

Venting to atmo in a car with AFM causes problems like you describe, due to air being released out of the system thats already been calculated by the AFM.

It doesnt have an Afm ( stinger replaced it ) which is why i was puzzled as to why it was running rough at idle,

crimp the vac line to bov and see if it makes a diff to idle. if it were leaking on the in/ducting side as in BEFORE the throttle plate, it wouldnt effect idle as its not upsetting signal to map sensor as such (if the stinger ecu is using one?)

I'd be getting rid of that imitation SSQV anyhow, they're leaky rubbish.

yep im not a fan of ssqs, Ive had bad runs with them, normal push types seem to be more reliable and responsive.

^Very good ones. No personal experience myself, but know a few runnin them and no troubles.

I'm running a SSQV copy, and running 1 bar, it's only if you give it a hard boost then stop straight away that it idles funny.. But gentle drivin its fine.

the copy ssqv bov, crap, I think the main problem was the spring is too strong inside, not letting it open fully.

I'm using a 50mm tial, its great! I just upgraded to the Version 2 in 50mm.

My friends one was fine for a week, then didn't seal at all causing all sorts of problems. Replaced with genuine HKS and problem solved. (though they still take a bit of persuading to open)
