Hi Lux diffs etc ...

Postby TRD Man » Thu Oct 02, 2008 1:04 pm

From those who have installed HiLux or Hiace/Liteace diffs in their road, race or rally cars I would like some information.

Which are interchangeable?
Do all the heads fit all the housings?
Which are the correct width for Corolla/Celica?
What brakes have people used with these conversions?
What about axles? Can they all be redrilled for your pcd?

Yes, although I'm not averse to it being a little wider as it will have the big factory flares.

Thought about looking for rear end from MA45 GT? (or F rear from *A60/*A65 celica/carina, *T141 corona)

F series rear, 4x114 already, fairly strong and means you wont have to remake mounts etc because it plugs straight in. (Assuming TA46 is 4 link + panhard? And assuming you arent changing rear geometry a lot or stud pattern anyway)

And can fit LSD from anything F series including altezzas, and has lots of diff ratios available as 7.5" crownwheel was used in heaps of things, from 70s crowns right through to altezzas, 90s hiaces, etc.

I was originally planning on using hilux diff, but when I found there was a bolt in option, I went with that.

F series is also commonly found in the ole 'coconut mover' series aka estima, enima, previa etc

Thanks for that. I am considering HiLux simply due to the variety of ratios that are readily and cheaply available.
But I am still undecided.
Hence the questions.

Hilux's are G series right?

Definatly can be re-drilled as my hilux diff was 4 x 114.3,
but just converted last week back to 5 x 114.3.

and I run Nisssn 120y front calipers on the rear,
but you end up with no handbrake.

you can use rear calipers from an integra or a maxima these are smallish and have handbrake mechanism built in

we used ae101 rear calipers then you still can run the handbrake on our hilux diff in our ae85 track car and on a hi ace diff in a kp60
Current: 5 x ae85's 2 x ae86's, 12a b1600 ute, ek9 type r civic, tube frame drag body.

F series

Postby Celica RA45 » Fri Oct 03, 2008 12:51 pm

Bruce try to find a MA46 celica supra or ra60 series GT as they run the same rear end also carina as well roughly around 79 to 83 period
and can get ratios from 3,5 up to 5.1 for your new rally car

Thanks for that Glenn. I'm looking at all options. Are the 5.1 ratios a factory option or an aftermarket item?

We have the option of staying with the T series rear end however I am concerned about it's lightness. Also there are few satisfactory ratio options and the most suitable, the TRD 5.4, is prone to wearing with relatively high usage due to the very small pinion.

The HiLux 5.3 looks to be very meaty.

diff

Postby Celica RA45 » Fri Oct 03, 2008 4:19 pm

any diff center will wear but if they have good baffles in the diff center to stop oil surge up the axle tubes ,that should stop most of it
also hilux rear will be about 40 kilos heavier all over
so 60 for T series 80 for F series and 100 for the G series
Its up to you also.
crown wheel and pinions are after market and come from italy of all things
ps its not the diff center on the T series that is weak ,mainly the axles unless you can find the disc brake rear for a gt TA45
