Headlights in the Oven

Postby xsspeed » Sun Oct 19, 2008 6:59 pm

Hey guys,

Not for a toyota but...

I have condensation in my BA Futura headlights. Looks like a$S and will fail next warrant I'd say.

I have bought a new set for cheap off trademe, so will probably whack them in, but I still want to fix mine, and either flick them on, or keep them as spares/for when I stick the FPV front on it (but thats another story).

Basically have found out to fix them I need to split them by putting them in the oven and reseal them.

My question is whats the process for splitting them in the oven, and what sealant should I use?

cheers
Steve

is drilling some discrete holes in the bottoms of the lights an option??
When in doubt, down and out.

Nah don't really wanna do that, Did it in my old car and still had issues. Have heard it work for some people but for me it just allowed moisture both in and out. Would rather keep them sealed.

Take the rubber boot off the back of the light and leave the light turned on for half an hour. Should dry them out

The process thats documented for Toyota lights is to leave them in the oven at approximately 150 degrees celsius for about half an hour until the stuff holding them together softens and you can then pry them apart (obviously with gloves as the plastic will be hot) and you can then clean the inside out, polish the inside if needed and reverse the process (re-heat) to put them back together. Possibly with some more silicone or something if there seems to be a leak in them somewhere.

Check on MKIV supra forums for the proper "how to" as its something that always needs to be done on those.
