86 diff and axel Qs

Postby d1 mule » Wed Oct 29, 2008 8:38 pm

ok anyone know what sort of power standard 86 (pre face) axels can take??
what sort of power can a TRD 2 way take??

anyone used a hydraulic handbrake with a 86 diff??

ideally i want about 150RWKW when im done with the 70

im throwing ideas around doing TRD 2 way with hydraulic handbrake if that will sort the shit standard handbrake.

will most likely be running a wilwood boosterless system if that affects anythin?

thanks

hey man,

from my reading its not so much the LSD itself that will cause you problems - the common breakage area on T series is C & P and axles shearing. obviously a TRD LSD is not going to address those areas, and they'll both take a fair bit of abuse on a drifter.

oh right, but would a LSD be better that a locker in terms of longevity of those parts as there isnt the extreme stresses when jusd turning, only when sliding?

My TRD 2 way is pretty savage...
Not locker savage, but still locks up quite quickly (if that's even an accurate way to describe it).
I've mulched three crown wheel/pinion sets so far.... All were 2nd hand, and one of dubious condition to begin with. Normally you end up wearing all the surface hardening off, makes a heck of a noise, but still functional.
(All that with standard 4AGE)

I'm reasonably certain I got told that the facelift axles aren't much good over 150kW...

interesting to see how some people can destroy T diffs with an n/a 4age and then others track race them with lsd and slicks and never have an issue!? (eric's te71 3tgte 1800 turbo to be precise). or glenn i think ran the std T series irs with lsd behind a 7agte carina and never broke it.
i've broken a couple early type axles myself running a locker.. which after some use on the street became really chattery round corners as the axle spline wore out.. until a little 1st gear skid in the wet broke one with a std 2tgeu. so engine power wasn't the cause of failure!!
the other axle broke tramping behind a 3tgte. if i had open diff or lsd i don't think i'd have an issue. moral of story dont run a locker on the street! i never ran any wider than 195.50.15 either so i guess that was the fuse in the driveline.

or you could come out to a race/sprint @ ruapuna and talk to a few people who have been racing with full slicks and t series rear ends for AGES with out dramas....

Slicks and alot of hard racing with no trouble here, early axles but they are custom made. The axles have dealt with 5 years of pain and suffering, as has the Crownwheel and Pinion.
