3S-GTE Spark plugs

Postby cat007 » Mon Nov 10, 2008 8:07 am

What does everyone recommend?

We were running some sort of overpriced jobbies before - probably what Toyota recommend.

Suggestions?

ND platinums from Toyota are dirt cheap and last forever.

If you get NGK plugs get them from STA parts out near the airport, check out their website $3.20 inc gst each for coppers and the rest of their parts are damn cheap too.

Ive always used NGK BKR7E for the last 5 years and more recently NGK BKR6E

I went slightly colder after upping the boost to 16psi.

I take them out every 8,000 kms and brush them clean, and replace at 16,000

By my math ive spent mabey $200 on plugs over 6 years and 100,000 kms.

Ive never really felt the need to get fancy plugs, and my recent dyno and af readout proves that copper is fine for 190 rwkw, and the motor runs a healthy 11:1 af ratio at maximum power.

That's ok on an MR2, but changing plugs in a Caldina GTT is a major PITA because you need to remove the I/C.

Better just to get the standard Toyota long life plugs and forget about them for the next 50-100,000kms, cheaper in the long run ;)

You do realise that the 6's are HOTTER than the 7's right?

Oh and for power, coppers can take whatever you chuck at them as long as you get the heat right - I'm running a non-resister version (CDI) of the BKR plug in the 9 heat range for 440wkw, and they cost me $2.90ea .

I love copper plugs :).

In around 150,000 kms of GT-Four ownership I think I've bought two sets of platinum plugs. Last set was $11 each from Toyota.

One of the sets that came out of my Celica went into wifey's Mitsi GSR and did another 15000 kms...

The use of copper plugs is not economic in modern engines.

Don't pay $6+ per plug when you can get them for under $3.
