Postby Jonno2002 » Tue Nov 11, 2008 1:20 pm

will a silvertop 20v from a ae101 trueno fit into a ae82 fxgt without much hassle ? i know someone with a blacktop in an aw11 and he had to change a mount or 2...

so yea whos done it and is it worth it cause he needs a new motor and has been offered this 1 so far ? as no1 seems to have a bluetop

pretty easy to do. things i can remember off the top of my head that i had to do:

use all the engine mounts off the ae82 to make it fit.

Will bolt up to the ae82 gearbox. starter motor positioning can be a hassle with the ae82 gearbox. can use the 20v gearbox with the ae82 mounts on it. ae82 axles will fit in the 20v box.

Need to fab up exhaust.

may need to modify power steering and aircon pump brackets so they will bolt to the 20v block.

other than that, it's just wiring.

worth it if you have the knowhow to do most of the work yourself, not so cost effective if you have to pay someone to do it.

You will need to run custom water lines from the radiator also, I believe.

Mounts are all bolt on, so no fabs needed there. Other than that, you need to fab exhaust, water lines, wiring and possibly fuel lines (I ran a longer return line on the aw11 iirc). Shifter cables will match the gearbox selectors. Clutch should not be a problem.

Of course, like distrb said, you can just use the ae82 gearbox.

Been done plenty of times, so definately doable. As said wiring would be the only b'tch.

If your mates interested I have a smallport for sale thats been in an ae82 fxgt. Am in auckland though. Drop me a PM if keen.

As far as the waterlines are concerned I'm pretty sure you can just mount an AE101 raditor in place of the original and run the factory hoses.

The mounting might take some work though - I think the ae101 radiators are a different shape.

ae101 radiators are taller, so you have to lower the mounts and take a large gouge out of the fan shroud for it to fit.

The bottem radiator hose fits, will need a different one for the top.

The one I used still has the sticker on it.
'Gates 05-1590 holden commodore VN 89-91 2L lower radiator hose'

Has a slight kink in it but looks alright.

Wirings not too bad.
Just strip all the bluetop wiring from the ae82 loom, strip all the ae101 wiring from the silvertop loom and splice them together.

The injector/ignition feed comes from behind the drivers headlight.
Tacho, water temp and oil pressure wires for the dash come from the plug by the passenger footwell.

Can find wiring diagrams on club4ag.com
