Celica GT-R, 4WS removal

Postby TazzieDevil » Fri Jan 23, 2009 10:27 am

Howdy,

So i've had a thought of removing the 4WS component of my Celica to make it a 2WS. (thanks to a suggestion)

Can anyone give advice on best steps, would it be easy to do?, viable? straight swap from a non 4ws celica?

I've taken it down to Mossrax in wgtn who advised that they could look at the "play in the rear wheels" which is what failed the WOF, but if its a stepper motor issue, im looking at $250 ish to fix. So im less inclined to do that.

Unless anyone wants a cashie weekend job?

Wow... just got call, reckons it needs a new steering rack - $450. (incl labour to replace) will fix the play and the 4ws fault.

PASS!

Now looking for options.. Mmmm.

You could try to determine if it is the actual rack failed, I am not sure but if it is one of those tie rods you might (maybe) be able to replace it..

If you remove the 4WS, you'll need to spend $400 or more getting it certified ...

Virm says

"A modification that affects the steering system must be inspected and certified by an LVV specialist certifier"

If you can't fix it on the cheap with used bits, you might be best to bite the bullet and get it done proper. That way it is sorted, and you never have to worry about it again.

Thanks leon, that saved me emailing you

I'm off to pick a part tomorrow. Its a project car for a reason, LOL.

I'll stick with the 4ws at this stage. The problem was with the "play" in the rear, which caused the wof to fail. If I can get some spare parts i'd be happy to spend some spanner time. Its exempt till april, so plenty of time.
