Lexus V8 in surf died....

Postby cat007 » Sat Feb 07, 2009 1:21 pm

Hey all,

A mate of mine has a Lexus V8 in a surf. Bought it that way. He's really onto it (being a marine engineer type), but is baffled by electricity.

Basically - his partner said there were a few small "pops" and then it died.
When jumping 12volts to the fuel pump, it runs, but like a pile of sh*t and flooring it, it pings and coughs and sounds like its running on 4 cylinders.

Do these engines (early model we think) run a fuel pump resistor?
Also when the surf was going - it was gutless as hell. Not sure if that means anything?

He has swapped AFM to try and eliminate the issue of it running purely, i.e. low power etc but hasn't swapped the AFM since the complete failure....

Greed. IIRC the AFM controls the fuel pump to a certain degree, When the AFM reads no airflow it cuts the fuel?

It revs ok - just sounds like a sack......

Sounds like its a "big gay 4 cylinder" - smooth still - but not quite a V8.....

Ah - well there's a "computer" type unit, about the same size as a window controller unit etc, that they previous owner has written "fuel pump" on. I'm guessing it's something to do with that. Will test tomorrow....
Thanks all.....

Is there anyone in the north shore area who knows these engines at all? The car's on the north shore (albany area) - would really appreciate it if someone could come take a nosey. tomorrow (Sunday)......

Do they have that? Where the Engine Check Light will flash giving the code? hmmmm if so - I'm not even sure the guy that installed the engine hooked up the engine check light. I'll ask tonight.....

If he hasn't - is it hard to hook one up in the mean time? Or is there any other way of doing the code test?

Depending on how much was butchered fitting it, it could be anything

Sure it isn't running on 4?? Quite common for coils and ignitors to die

It IS running on 4 - well sounds like it - but the fuel pump doesnt turn on unless you hardwire it.....
