Rubber - What is there out there and where to get?

Postby MrOizo » Tue Mar 03, 2009 6:56 pm

I have been looking for the last few days for a decent rubber which acts as a dampener for some gear we have.

I have justtried a EPDM(?) which is more of a foam and thats ok but the only glue they sell for it sucks - the rubber is alot of the time in tension and the glues (contact adhesives) simply pull apart.

The rubber that i have now is quite soft but quite strong.

What is there out there that would be suitable for me?

You might actually need to explain what you are wanting something to be suitable for

Is a damper for something size of a cellphone, or something the size of a dumptruck? Size/weight etc is gonna make a bit of difference to the suggestions I would imagine

Possible - being silicone, i guess its resistant to grease?

I have what i removed. took it into a place to try and get a match but they couldnt find anything similar.

I was hoping i would find something that was in liquid form and could pour into a mould. is this silicone rubber like this?

I'll add a pic soon of what it is we have.

Cheers.

Also what hardness do you want, ie the sure rating.

The urethane used in the likes of nolethane bits is around 80 sure. You can go to people like Thorndon Rubber, and get them to fill you mould and cure it in the oven, should not cost too much, my std. engine mount filling was around $25 each mount.

If you want cheap, how about windowscreen sealant, or better panel sealant?

Sure is, comes in various grades but it's main use is in mould making, also used for making skins for robotic animantronics ;)

Go see one of the companies that do industrial rubber conveyor belts.
Ask about Linatex, which is a high quality wear resistant rubber used
for lining pumps, chutes, hoppers etc. Tougher than tough, and flexible.
There are special cold vulcanising adhesives for sticking it to anything.
