Perspex bad, polycarb good... perspex turns into long sharp stabby things in a crash and polycarb (lexan) crumples up.

AFAIK Lexan MR10 is the only plastic you can legally run as a window on the road, and that is if your motorsport authority card has it specified.

ohh.. and MR10 is ridiculously prohibitivly expensive.

To make it road legal you need to have the following - from the Motorsport NZ site:

(f) Plastic Glazing, fitted to a motor sport vehicle used on public roads, may be authorised
by the Authority Card provided the following requirements are met:
(i) The plastic glazing is only fitted to the side and/or rear windows (not the front screen).
(ii) Be of an approved material, either Lexan MR10 and Cyrolon AR2,
(iii) be securely mounted on the vehicle, and
(iv) comply with the requirements of this Schedule(Schedule A).
Note: Plastic glazing may also be certified under the Low Volume Vehicle Code.
See ya

When I was looking for some a few months back it was $500/m² for 3mm thick lexan.

last time I checked the only MR10 you could get was 6mm thick as its used for shop windows . I can't see any point using that as its heavier than the glass in my car .
You can get thinner lexan ,but it's not "an approved material" , maybe as was pointed out you can get LVVC certifed , but I've never heard of it and I'm sure other people have thought of doing that .
Hopefully someone can prove me wrong :D

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

The place I went to makes lexan windows for race cars, I would assume the stuff they sell there is the right stuff. AFAIK Lexan MR10 is a General Electric product, and its basically just got some kind of anti-scratch formula, I see no reason why it shouldn't come in different thicknesses. I was given a small sample and its definitely 3mm thick, and seems to be quite scratch resistant.

ring LVVTA 04 477-4372 to see if they will/can certify anything other than Lexan MR10.

FYI: MR means mar resistant

You definitly can buy 3mm MR10 in NZ, somewhere around $800+ per sheet. If you want to buy any thinner than that you will have to import it yourself.
XL10 has the same strength properties as MR10, just not mar resistant

I think you are paying to much for 3mm MR10 , I bought a sheet yesterday for $504 inc GST

Where from? I've now got all the gear to cut my own windows out so I don't need to go through the place I was going to use.

I used 1mm XL10 for my rear window and cut it with scissors.
You can't break the stuff, so cut it with anything. bandsaw, hacksaw, knife, scissors, angle grinder... ok maybe not an angle grinder

and mar is?

scratch resistant
