How to flip a GT4

Postby CelicaGT8 » Mon Mar 30, 2009 8:26 pm

Ok, so iv almost finished the inside of the GT4, but now its time for the bottom of the car, so i want to flip it over.

Iv made some saw horse like stands for it to sit on, in both the engine bay on the rails, and in the boot. so it sits above the ground,

so how do i flip it?
Heres some pics of what iv started to do...

Oh jesus, dude, those straps have a lashing capacity of like, 250kg, they probably have a safety factor of 4 or so, but still, not designed for lifting/holding weight up like that, please don't go under the car when its hanging off those, I know a bare shell is light, but if it fell on you, I doubt you'd be able to get it off you by yourself.

Other than that, novel!

haha, thanks for that, that was so funny to read.
Anyway, they are rated at 450kg aparently, and theres no way in hell you could get me under that thing lol, um, but i will leave them up as a safty when its on the stands...

But its how to get it on the stands that im not sure about.... i dont just want to get a bunch of mates to help flip it, because ofcause.... if it did fall, it could do some serious damage... to the people that is

mate of mine had his Seris 2 RX7 on a spit thing, was 2 steel A frames, one at each end with a pole perpindicular to the top point. it then had some frames that bolted to the chassie rails via the bumper mounts, these had slightly bigger diameter poles in the middle for the A frames to slip into.

2 big engine stands modified to bolt into the ends of the chassis rails would probably work, depends how much height you can get out of them though I guess. Of course, that will consume valuable project funds :-/ I think without a chassis spit type thing, its going to be quite difficult to do without damaging the car.

Find a couple of old matresses, lay one against the side of the carport, the other on the ground next to it.

Tie straps to the passenger side of car and roll it over onto the matresses, strap to wall on its side and do ya work.

yeap like they sorta said, id say get some rhs (square tube) drill some hols to bolt them inside all 4 chassis beam openings and weld a paice accross them both with a pipe in the middle, at back and front, get the boys around and lift it up by the middle at each end with the strops then flip it and drop it onto your stands

Heres one I prepared earlier. If you want it on its back, just put both matresses on the ground and i'm sure you can sort the rest.

Interesting, put it on matteress then raise it again... but im worried about damage... there will still be a bit of weight in the car. apart from that, it seems like a good idea, and good photoshopping for a quicky

Thanks Scott, I tried my best

I'd personally just put it on its side, flatmate did his car the same way and it came up mint. Don't quote me on this, but I doubt the roof would collapse if you have a bare shell and flipped it. Safest way is just do it on its side if you're worried though.

Considering the straps you're using now I don't recommend suspending it above the ground in any shape or form :P

Ahh, but heres the thing, i could put it on its side, so its still just on the wheels on that side and secure it so it wont fall and work on it on a bit of an angle, but i need to take the rear subframe out to do under it and to put a new supra diff in.... and i dont have any mattressesdfdff
