4age turbo 20v throttle body question

Postby ke_25 » Sat Apr 18, 2009 8:28 pm

HEY,

have been told by numerous people different opinions on whether to run the quad throttle bodies, or go with a 'big' single throttle body on current 4age turbo,

i am running black top head/block with ross pistons etc etc and will be running 25psi+ at times so want th best outcome!! any one had any experiences with different trials etc?

oh yeah also will be running link g4 storm if any difference

cheers shaun

stock setup seems to come up with the numbers. but i recon it could be improved on with a single setup, but only if the person making the inlet knows what they are doing. runner taper, runner length, bellmouths, angle the runners enter the ports, plenum design to get even cylinder distribution etc.. all need to be looked into. so unless you know someone in the game or can make and test them yourself. stock is looking like a good option.

Simon from speedtech suggested a sinlg esetup would be a better idea. Go single and let us know how it turns out.

I thought the theory was that air is only getting sucked in 1 cyl at a time so if you think about it that way you would probly achive bigger power numbers using a big single throttle body because you can flow more air with a wide open throttle. But i've heard ITB's give better throttle response, especially in NA engines.

I run IDT on my silvertop turbo aswell and seems sweet.

yeah, /iTB's do seem to get good results!! im not doubting this, but was wondering if anyone has tried it,

i am still going to go down teh single throttle body route, one to see whats its like and two just for something a little different, i will let you know as soon as it gets running..one day

has anyone had any experience designing plenums etc for?

like is volome, trumpet length etc to suit? i have hear the plenum should be roughly the same size as teh engine, but haven't read to much up on it

Cheers Shaun

plenum size doesn't have a huge effect. so wouldn't get too picky on that. but i would go bigger than 1x engine volume on turbo setup. shorter runners than factory is a good move, if your running a large turbo. as will move max torque up the rev range. alot of stock setups you see with big turbos, have a stack of torque as they come on boost, then torque will fall away. so end up with a narrow powerband,
its a bit of a black art really. ive made a few with good results, but aren't no expert. unless you can make lots of prototypes and dyno test. guess as good as you can and hope for the best. theres a few calculators out there for runner lengths, but are pretty much all for n/a

There was one on the red AE86 in the performance car mag a while ago.
That was a blacktop to with single nissan thottle body and t3/t4.
Issue 102, june 2005

Also, the Tony Rigoli's girlfriend's AE92 corolla was single. That made massive power. There in Aussie.

Good luck.
