ETCS-I and TPS (problem when accel)

Postby gtpornstar » Mon Apr 20, 2009 3:43 pm

Anyone know how to adjust the ETCS-I on a 1997 supra ?
found the adjusting screw with lock nut were loose.

I assume this is the reason that the car seems to go into a default etcs-i mode where the accelerator pedal makes no change to the vehicle rpm.
happens when i accelerate very hard, car has to be switched off and then restarted.

Looking at codes i get 41 and 51. And there is no other adjustment for the tps :(

ignore the 51, 41 is TPS signal fault.
Any loose wires?

I have had the same issues with my Aristo 2JZ-GTE ECS-I throttle body after repairing code 89

TPS setting is fraction of mm to set book says must use scan tool paper clip works...you have all ready figured that out...to scan you need a advanced OBD2 scanner

This what I found to set adjustment screw this is to set idle DO NOT MOVE TPS to far or you will have 5000 rpm idle

Un plug the 3 sensors ( main is tps yes do this while running) you will have 1800/1900 rpm when this screw is set right (Aristo JZS161)

TPS plug =1 ecu told throttle plate position
Pedal position sensor =2 where you want throttle plate it to be
Throttle motor plug =3 where the ecu says the throttle plate should be

Adjust the screw to get idle with 3 sensors unplugged while running aim for 1800 / 1900 rpm idle
Pull battery terminal for 30 seconds
Re plug all three then reconnect battery
Using jumper wire / paper clip turn key to ON don't start hold gas to floor count to 10 ( this resets pedal position sensor )
Leave igntion on remove jumper wire / paper clip
Re start enjoy 750 rpm idle
Recheck codes

Have a look here this will help

Repair Manual / DIAGNOSTICS / ENGINE

Left side codes with advanced OBD2 scanner P0120/41
Right side codes with paper clip

PS TPS is same as ST210 D4 engine my throttle body motor is from same... TPS works when same part number there are two types

Hi Jason

Thanks a lot for the detailed response.

So the three sensors are the pedal sensor, the tps sensor and the motor sensor (motor as in the motor driving the throttle flap).
I didnt check for a sensor at the pedal because there is a cable running out to the throttle which seems to have the tps built into the rotating assembly.

heres a picture -

Yeah it probably was me trying to fix it without knowing what to do after it was loose.

What i mean is i am trying to understand which sensors need to be unpluged before doing the sequence.

Because I couldnt find a plug at the pedal.
Only one by the cable (in picture - assuming this is the tps wires) and another on the opposite side of the throttle body (which i assume drives the traction control)

also when you say use a jumper i assume you mean with E1 and Tc right ? same for when checking error codes ?

Cable side is pedal position
Opposite side is TPS (traction is a combo of all three)

Yes correct you want engine check light flashing codes

Check your codes via DIAGNOSTIC block in engine bay terminal TC & E1 with a paper clip

Dash lights will all flash count the orange engine light only

Repair Manual / DIAGNOSTICS / ENGINE this will take you to engine fault code list

Follow the flow charts to fix
