Blacktop 20v - cheapest option to gain 20kw?

Postby Dopamean » Tue May 05, 2009 6:01 pm

So many options but all rather out of my price range for the moment.

Currently it’s just stock - catalytic converter has been removed and replaced with a resonator.

K&N pod filter but no heat shielding so whether this makes an improvement I doubt it.

What mod’s should I look to do first to make a small power gain?

Also I've converted from BP Ultimate to Synergy 8000, anyone else fell like it’s not just Ribena that’s been watering down their product?
There was a notable difference between the two.....

Pod filter probably cost you 10kW

Go back to stock air box and get a high flow panel filter.

20kW is a bit to get from an NA blacktop, I suggest looking through some of the project threads, there are a few NA projects there.

I would probably be looking at going back to standard air box plus say an FGK exhaust, but you have to be prepared to spend for that.

Cheapest way to gain 20kW would be sell it and get a celica or caldina

Pass racing (I MEC) trumpets inside the stock air surge box. Biff the pod (or at least make it into a cold air feed).
+FGK headers.

Doubt that'll give you 20kw extra though.

Try running it on Gull Force 10. Probably makes F all difference, but it's supposed to be good.

20kw will need internal work like cams etc i'd say.

Get a K&N panel filter as suggested above. Maybe spend the money on handling instead like better springs, sway bars etc.

Assuming a healthy blacktop makes around 95-100 atw....
I got 120kw atw now...but trust me, it wasn't cheap.

Can you name your budget?

Like Crampy said, with what he is suggesting I think you can probably get a extra 5-10kw if lucky???

Heh, been a few posts on me thread since I've been busy down in Hamiltron.

I guess I should ground myself and be thankful Toyota made such a good engine in the first place.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been told an electric water pump can yield horsepower gains - anyone tried this on a 1600 BT?

Also I'll sell the pod and buy a K&N panel filter - attaching the original airbox cover.

I would love to go the turbo route and be one of a kind and all but that would defeat the purpose of buying this car in the first place.

Money is not really too much of an issue but that being said I still owe money on the car and would rather pay it off before modding it any further.

So I take it that the only gains to be made are through a full exhaust system 2.5” – Better extractors.
And a cold induction system?

Sounds like an easy 1k spent to me.

I was hoping to find a few tricks in the bag so to speak....

nope toyota used up most of the tricks. 2.5" is too big for exhaust, i dunno about the blacktops but silvertops have this silly squashed section in the exhaust where it goes over the subframe - i think the most gains are to be had from getting rid of this.

first post hit the nail on the head though - if you want to go 20kw faster, budget 5k minimum. or sell it and buy something thats already fast-ish

i highly doubt that an electric water pump is going to give you the bang for buck you are after!

+1

Its not easy/cheap getting power out of these unless you go forced induction but like i said its not cheap.

i think the black top squashed section is even worse than the silvertop!

Yeah checked out the other thread which has good info in it.
"pod filter or cold air box" - it's given me some idea's.

Take the pod off and install a K&N panel filter.
Get the squashed section over the cross member replaced with something more high flowing.

That all being said at the end of the day this is a wagon and I was never intending to totally trick it out, I was wanting to save that for a BZG/BZR coupe - less body weight.

Car mods will consist of the above but I intend to lower it on tien springs and replace the shocks.
Got 17" on it already and then it will be the misses car!

I work for Ticketek and worked the Hamilton 400 - lol my Carib got to go around the V8 racetrack :D

Toyota had like a senator model of their high end Corolla 3.5 supercharged mean!

If you're doing suspension, pm Warwick to discuss whiteline rear sway bars. They're still the best bang for buck improvement I have found on a front drive car.

Also, get a nice agressive wheel alignment.

Then accept the fact that with a wagon, you're going to be slower than a coupe, but you can carry twice the amount of stuff in the car!

Chuck the 17" wheels, and get some light 15" wheels

try ditching all the unessessary weight like your air con system, spare tire, take off your powersteering pump belt and see if that gives you a bit more,
new sparkplugs, leads, oil+filter

I don't recommend removing the power steering belt. I did it once at the drags and it sucked big time. It's really not worth it.
If your air con works, don't remove it, especially if it's a dark coloured car.

Just get some trumpets, they will give you a gain. From there, do suspension and make it more fun to drive, rather than more powerful.

even if its not working, dont ditch the aircon - just get it fixed. the convenience of aircon in a street car far, far, FAR outweighs the imperceptible difference you will get from chucking it.
