AE111 6 Speed conversion

Postby FANGIN » Tue May 19, 2009 1:57 pm

Before you guys tell me to do a search, I have, and wound up trawling through 20 pages of crap with no luck..

Right, due to my 5 speed BZ-V's gearbox being a little whiny and the new 7A-GTE going in, i want to upgrade to a 6 speed BZ-R box.

Questions are:

Straight Bolt in swap?
Same speedo drive output on the box?
Reverse signal wiring the same?
Is it worth it or should I just buy a low kms 5 speed & swap her in?

I would be pretty certain the c160 will not last long behind/next to a 7agte

The torque will kill it
I would say go for a c56, which is what you already have, but if your box is on the way out may need to be replaced or rebuilt. Then if that dies get an e series box.

c160 won't last and at the price people want for them will be a waste of money.

Cheers for that,

$500 for a fwd box is pricey (Trademe 6spd prices).

E series box? What are they out of?

Dont know sweet FA about fwd gearboxes

I forget the complete code, but the ones you would want are from say an ae101 gtz

Search "e series gearbox" its been covered quite a bit I think

E58
you will also need the drive shafts and possibly the hubs
i cant remember if the n/a hubs take the s/c shafts

having said that a 5speed C box will take some abuse. how many can ppl say they have seen destroyed by power? then again i dont know of any behind a 7agte. my aw11 had been drag raced and ran a stock c52 with maybe about 150-160hp

yeah the C160 would spit its crown wheel at you in about 3 seconds behind a 7agte

Yeah i say if you freshen the c56 that you have already as it has and lsd, but im thinking it wont last too long. Is that a chance you want to take? Sell it and buy a e58 out of the ae101 gtz's and get the shafts too it has a better lsd than the c56. What car is it going into? You havent specified, only the gearbox that you currently have that is whinning which is bz v but then you are probably using the ae111 shafts too. Im told the ae101 gtz shafts will fit the same hubs.

Postby fxgt race » Tue May 19, 2009 7:03 pm

I had two c160 gearboxes that i tryed, first one at puke ended up not being able to select 3 so i put in the other one for taupo and after 2 laps 2nd gear went, not a nice shifting box at all and i only have 122kw atw.

Agree, 200kw will annihilate a C160.

E58 will be the way to go, and axles would be sortable.

My 80-ish kw (or was it 60kw  ) AE101 silver top destroyed crown wheel and pinion on the 6 speed. I don't do burnouts (but I do drive hard in the corners).
Anyway, you will find that 6speed is not good for grippy tyres or lots of torque. Rebuilding one isn't cheap either - close to $500 for pinion/shaft and crown.
If you go for turbo, 6speed is pointless.

It's all going into a AE111 BZ-V.

Will look at the E58 conversion.

Main use of the car will still be to get me to work & back. With the occasional open road thrash. I'm not building a track car or anything thats going to be driven hard on a regular basis.

Hows that?

I was once stuck on the grass and pavement and the lsd in my c56 never engaged and just spun 1 wheel on the grass. That lsd just wasnt as active and noticable as a viscous one in the e58s

Really? The current lsd in my car spins both wheels on dry tarmak quite easily, although wet grass > dry tarmak (one wheel on each) it spins a little, then engages and does a skid :)

I think the outer splines will be the same between the two. Have been told that auto AE101 axles have the same long inner spline as LSD E boxes, and would slot into the outer hubs as well.

Might have to do a bit of experimenting with mounts though?

Nah ive got mine sitting in there and all seems fine at the moment but there is still one more mount to bolt up so it isnt 100% just yet.

Apparently factory C56 Helical LSD's spin one wheel when one wheel is in the /on wet grass. Never had the chance to try though...

they will spin a wheel when its int he air, as the need resistance to work.
wet grass would still provide that resistance i would have thought
