Mechanical oil gauge legality

Postby KwS » Wed May 20, 2009 10:54 pm

Hey, tried searching but it brought up thousands of unrelated results.... grrr.

Whats the legality of having mechanical oil pressure/temp gauges in the cabin? I cant seem to see anything on the land transport site, but i was told a while back it wasnt legal, due to the risk of the oil line bursting.

there's no law about it but it's generally a bad idea to have hot oil in the cabin anyway

Given that the oil doesn't circulate I be very surprised if it's that hot at the gauge end.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a mechanical oil gauge in the cabin.
A few too many wives tales I think.

Sweet. Wish i knew who told me that now... i'd kick their ass.

ill replace the gauge anyway, just because im not keen on getting a face full of hot oil.

Also, with an oil temp gauge, do i have to do what a lot of people do, and stick a sensor in the sump bung, or is it all good to just have it on the sandwich plate?

I thought they were glycol filled or something like that? Or am I missing the point?

No. I specifically said "surprised". Because there's always going to be one bod who'll have a story to tell that'll blow all rational theory away.

So did you burn it on the gauge/line in general use or did it burst thus providing a flow of hot oil?

Temp ones are, but pressure ones use the fluid they are measuring in the line.

As long as it's a decent mechanical gauge and you are careful when installing it, they are fine,
but I still prefer elec, as mechanical are a pain in the ass to fit and remove.

only reason I can see that happening is crap quality or crap install.

It was a good quality genuine autometer gauge. Can't comment on quality of installation as the gauge was installed by the car's previous owner. I can however note that it worked perfectly for the 1year I had it in the car (and however long the previous owner had it) before it randomly came off and covered me in oil. May have just been a freak occurence, I dunno - I do know that I feel a whole lot safer with my electronic gauges now.
