Possible Problem With Gearbox?

Postby celica_xr9145 » Sat May 23, 2009 7:41 pm

Might not be a problem but theres no harm in asking.

Basically when in 5th gear and you go to shift down to 4th, it will not get in gear, doubling the clutch workes now and then but can be annoying.
Lately, i have been going straight to 3rd, its mainly a problem on the high way when going up a hill.

What could it be?

When you say shifting into 4th is it when you change down gently or really try to downshift with a bit of force? Do you have troubles selecting 4th changing up from third aswell? And does the problem occur all the time, when you first drive it and have ben driving for a while. And does it only do it at gighway speeds, not from 70 or 80km/h? No funny noises when you try and shift down?

no, does it all the time, no funny noises, and does it when you first start and when it been driving for ages. It shifts into 3rd to 4th to 5th no problem, it just shifting from 5th to 4th, it just doesnt want to get in gear.
It does it at all speeds and does it when shifting smoothly and when giving it a bit of force.

Any ideas?

Possibly it the reverse lockout stopping you from selecting 4th, that may be due to stretched cables which you should be able to adjust at the shifter or gearbox.

Couple of things to try:
  • Shift into 3rd, then 4th without disengaging the clutch.
  • Move the gear stick all the way to the left then back to the right and try to engage 4th.

If these work then try adjusting the cables.

Is it grinding or just not going in at all?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Its not grinding, it just doesnt get into gear but have just took it out for a quick spin and seems ok, now it looks like it only does it when cold.

Mine is a little notchy into 3rd when cold, but after 2mins it slips in like a greasy weasel. People don't realise that like an engine, a gearbox takes time to get properly lubricated and warmed up before it works properly.. I'd just give it an oil change, at 206kms though you can't expect it to be as good was when it left the factory!
