V8 soarer cutting out

Postby UTERUS » Sun May 24, 2009 8:17 pm

I have not started my car for 5 weeks, last time i drove it everything seemed fine.

Last night as i was cruising at about 100 km/h i could feel a light miss every 5 seconds or so.

After about a minute it got worse and under load it felt low on power, another minute later it would not accelerate past 1/4 throttle and past 4000rpm.

This morning i tried it again and it runs fine at idle and free revving, anything past 1/4 throttle and it splutters very badly and will not rev past about 2500rpm.

I have tried bypassing the fuel pump ecu with no change.
It runs the same with the afm unplugged.
With the paperclip in te1 and e1 the o/d light flashes constantly which from what i can gather it means no fault.
Reset the ecu.

Opened the ecu up and checked for dry connections, eveything looks ok.

What would you helpfull chaps reccomend i try next?
It is a myth that emos are contagious, and you may be infected. However, it is still widely accepted to wash your hands after physical contact

Sounds like the fuel pump is poked

I've had 12v directly to the pump by bypassing the fuel pump ecu and the pump runs fine, unless it can seem to run fine and as soon as it is under load it stops? I would expect it to blow the fuse in that case.

can you check fuel pressure? I had the same problem with an MA61 years ago. Problem showed up exactly as you describe, Gave up and had a mobile mechanic diagnose it for me, low fuel pressure/faulty pump. Although you could hear the pump working, it wasn't building enough pressure in the lines. Replaced pump and car was fine. If it's not the pump, still sounds like it's not getting enough fuel for some reason.

I would have said that too...

just not supplying enough. Had the same thing in my AW11 - would idle fine but under load, splutter :o

That just means the O/D switch is in the wrong place for diagnostics, are you getting the klingon in the lower part of the dash??

Doubt it's the fuel pump, although could be filter.....no one changes them because they're in a bastard place.
Suspect coils too

Hrmmm, it's never had an o/d switch i guess the previous owner took it out. Yep the klingon is displayed in the status bar.
I'll see if i can connect a fuel pressure guage to the rail and grab some other coils.

Did you press the Scroll button?? and get both EFI OK and ECT OK?? Although from the No O/D button, I'm guessing its converted??

And when you had the ECU apart, you didn't notice any leaking caps??

I'll check tomorrow about the scroll button.
Will hopefully be manual by the end of june if i get everything i need.

The caps looked ok physically but i didn't check the capacitance with my multimeter.

That suggests a dodgy AFM to me, unplugging a working afm would give similar symptoms to what you have wouldn't it?

Soarer will run fine with no AFM, will just be rich as hell (wouldn't do it for an extended period of time though)
