Steering Rack End removal ???

Postby Maxwedge » Mon Jun 15, 2009 6:46 pm

WOF time and the AE82 sedan failed on a rack end- the piece between the steering rack and tie rod. I know these are really tight but just for clarification, are they normal thread and not left hand thread or something like that as I just dont want to snap anything.

locking pin? some racks have a locking pin in them and require drilling out then in with a monkey wrench to undo or some have a locking ring that needs to be undone

On my ae85 I finally got them undone by lowering the car with a pipe wrench around the rack end hanging down on an angle.

It was normal thread direction. Ae82 should be the same.
The torque band is wide and the road is narrow

it will be normal thread

most have some kind of device that prevents them from turning though - usually a washer thats folded over on two opposing sides of the ball joint body. have to get a chisel or big screwdriver onto those and fold them back.
