98 altezza beams 3sge head remove. attn strx7 maybe?

Postby YeMs » Tue Jul 21, 2009 8:09 pm

right, its 7pm after a c*nty days work im trying to remove the head from my (sum what new) altezza. (clever me thought i scored a deal when it cam in with a snapped cambelt)

any who, have all the covers off etc. trying to remove the VVTI hubs from the cams.. possible or not? i tried loosening the centre bolt and sliding them off like normal cam gears, but no can do. so i have removed all the outer ring bolts which allows the outer rings to come off. i have removed all the bolts from the cam caps, and taken them off. but the cams still seem to be held in, at the front sum how. they are loose and slide around, but are not free to lift out. frustrating at this time off the evening when my stomach is telling me to get to bloody maccas haha.

so, ideas? any1 had the head off 1 of these snakes and knows the procedure?

don't take apart the cam pulleys.

what do you mean by " they are loose and slide around" do you mean you can slide the cams back and forth?

yes. i have removed all the caps except the large front cap which contains the VVTI solenoids (which i have removed). i have unbolted it, its free, like moves around, same with the cams, but i cannot lift the front cap off for sum reason. its not just stuck on dowels as it moves freely but just wont lift off.

not a huge amount, but yes they are loose, can get movement out of them. but its the front cap which holds the VVTI solenoids which i cant get off. this is also loose, but just wont lift off and i can find no reason for it to not lift off.

you need to take off the covers marked E (10mm hex), and corresponding one in the center of the exhaust pulley (14mm hex) which exposes the 12mm hex bolts that hold the pulleys to the camshafts..

undo those hex bolts and then you should be able to slide the pulleys off.

if you dont take the pulleys off, then you wont get the solenoid housing off as the pulleys have a collar that slides over them. its hard to describe, but when you get the pulleys off, you'll see what i mean.

I'd say at a guess they are very similar to the VVTi JZ front caps there is 2 little hex drive bolts holding them in, i came very close to snapping them, on the first head i pulled apart.

I'll call in and see you tomorrow at work, unless you post saying you've sorted it.

there is a seal behind each cam on no 1 and that is holding the cams from coming out plus you need the no cam caps undone as well to help
