how thick is the oil? with a 20 valve i would use at least 15-40, they really like to burn oil.

what colour smoke?
Grey: most likely exhaust valve stem seals
Blue: most likely inlet valve stem seals or worn oil control ring
Black: normal under load if not excessive (like diesel), other wise it is over-fueling (do you run 91?).
Obviously it could be mixture of all of those.
4L for 8000kms is not too excessive consumption for a 20v (if it sees a lot of over 4.5k rpm).

Interesting to note black smoke will appear whitish-gray in headlights of the following car in dark.

Put 95 or 98 in it, running 91 is false economy.

Doesn't sound that bad. My BZ-Wagon needed topping up every 4,000kms (sometimes more, sometimes less; depending on how it was driven). It didn't blow any noticable smoke (other than black). This was true from 120kms when I bought it to 180kms when I sold it.

Most other BZ & corolla owners I know go through similar amounts.

Re: smoke - I was told by a toyota mechanic that the motors run rich under heavy throttle to protect the motor & keep it cool - so nothing to worry about (unless it turns blue or white).

got 20-50 valvoline in mine, i get it cheap.

Also, going to a thicker oil is a good idea (not too thick, like gear oil. hey, ive heard of it happening!) but dont forget to take apart the plenum and clean the lake of oil on the bottom of it. i try and do this at least every 25,000km. last time i did it i got a shotglass full of oil
