o2 sensor for st-215 3s-gte

Postby speedracer07 » Mon Aug 17, 2009 3:43 pm

I think I need to replace my 02 sensor and was wondering if you guys know if I can use an o2 sensor from a different Toyota? (or better yet a universal denso one) the caldina part number is 89465-21030.

Although my car is running well I think the o2 sensor heater is not working properly as I'm getting a check light as soon as my engine temp goes up. I'm throwing a code 21 which is either o2 sensor or abnormal heater signal but the car (once it's warmed up) is running fine and the AF from my UEGO Wideband is pretty close to 14.7 (again when it's warmed up) so I think it's the heater and not the o2 sensor.

O2 sensors are universal, so long as its the right one for the application eg heated narrowband and the 4 wires are wired up properly, or the plug fits and the wire colours match up then you'll be fine. From a toyota you will be safe, should be able to find one at a pick-a-part. Good practice to clean a 2nd hand one before you use it though.

And by cleaning I hope you mean use the butane/propane torch to burn off the crap (while monitoring the voltage output to see if it is alive, should be arount 0.9-1.2v even when you extinguish flame while it is hot and gas is still going through it), and not by other means.

If it's not throwing the code straight away then it's more likely to be the sensor not the heater.

A sensor fault is defined as Voltage amplitude <0.3v for 60 seconds after engine is warmed up and RPM > 2500, whereas a heater fault is defined as open circuit in the heater for 1sec with IG on.

thanks for the posts guys, I thought it was universal but the different part numbers were throwing me,

yes it was cleaned using a torch but I don't know if he monitored the readings while burning it...

I thought the sensor heater code would only get thrown if the ECU has determined that the car has warmed up (getting a temp reading from a different source) and sufficient time has passed that the heater should have sent a different signal than what it is?

heater circuit is just dumb resistive wire coil inside of the sensor.
The ecu checks for abnormalities like open and short circuit, it does not monitor exact resistance of the heater coil.
