How To Fit A Universal Exhaust

Postby celica_xr9145 » Sat Aug 22, 2009 12:06 am

ive seen some universal exhaust mufflers down supercheap auto, repco and trade me but have no idea of how to fit them.

Do they need welding on or is there an easier way of doing it (Warrentable)?

If they do need welding on, how much do you think it would cost and where do i go?

Thanks

Go to a reputable exhaust shop, and get something that works and doesn't sound like shit.

Need to be welded on. Ask on here and you'll find someone that will do it for a box of beers or $20-30 at your local Pitstop (if they're not in a ripping you off mood that is)

Its not going to do anything for your car and they look and sound terrible.

If you seriously want to do something to your exhaust get the whole thing done from the extractors something free flowing and less restrictive than your stock one

Agree, my new car has a full skunk2 system on it with cannon out the back, sounds like ass and I have to leave the silencer in so I dont sound like a tool.

thanks for the replies guys, i went to an exhaust shop today and got this fitted:

Its a Rage exhaust with an adjustable silencer on it, totally gets rid of the crappy 3SGE noise (until you hit 5000 rpm), sounds awesome.

I asked on thier opinions on the supercheap auto canons and they said its not very often they use one. Apparently most of them are too loud and not legal.
For the same price of the supercheapauto one, i got this rage one that they recommended :) :)

re the silencer, if wof inspector is fussy they will fail you on it. exhaust is not allowed to be easily modifiable IIRC.

really, do you think it matters that the silencer isnt removable? Its apart of the exhaust if you see what i mean

Also they said that they have fitted the same one to alot of thier customer cars :?

And what is the decibel limit?

will have to be a picky wof inspector though.

Just explain how you can't modify it without tools, just like any muffler

depending on where you go for wof

a muffler with a bolt and nut shouldn't pass they are ment to be permanently attached, if it fails just take out the bolt and put a rivet in place most people find that will pass ok.

VTNZ guys told me the same thing

its too loud @93dB and you can adjust it.. so FAIL

however the old guy there says , just drop a weld in there so it cant be removed or adjusted and i'll pass it.
ended up getting a 2" muffler put on :( but passes wofs every time now

Most wof places will ask for you to go and get an objective noise test at that volume.

I passed mine at 94.2dB with no silencer.

Oh, noes, you got yourself a fart cannon, that does not improve anything (apart from noise, and "likebility" by cops).
Should of gotten real exhaust system, but I bet it is worth more than your car.
Sorry to be so negative.

Here what should be done first in light mods:
1) ECU, when you squeezed max out of it ->
2) cams, when the intake becomes chocking point ->
3) Intake, when the exhaust becomes the actual limit ->
4) Exhaust (and not just a fart cannon at the end).

Doing 4 and 3 without 1 and 2 is waste of money and time, and annoys the hell out of everyone.

But then again, if you are going after performance, ST18X shell is the heaviest, far better start with ST202 SSIII that comes with ~140ish kw already and there is nothing needs to be done to it.

Just realistically compare to the price of:
Modifying ST183 to achieve the performance of ST202 SSIII
or
Low km ST202 SSIII that is factory with LSD,lighter and more reliable.

Here are the specs:
ST183:
Curb vehicle weight, kg 1310
Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 165 ps (121.36 kw) / 6800 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 19.5 kg*m (191.23 N*m) / 4800 rpm
Power density 7.94

ST202:
Curb vehicle weight, kg 1210
Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 200 ps (147.10 kw) / 7000 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 21.0 kg*m (205.94 N*m) / 6000 rpm
Power density 6.05

ZZT231:
Curb vehicle weight, kg 1140
Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 190 ps (139.75 kw) / 7600 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 18.4 kg*m (180.44 N*m) / 6800 rpm
Power density 6

So best value for money would be ST202 SSIII, as you can find one under 6000 easy.

In other words, gaining 35Hp out of NA engine, short of Beams engine transplant, or Turbo would be very, very expensive (I would say about ~10g).
