New car arrived: Couple of questions (1994 Toyota Levin)

Postby DXROLLA » Sat Aug 22, 2009 8:06 pm

Hey i picked up my 1994 Toyota Levin today (silvertop 20v)

There a couple of things wrong with it, 1st being an oil burning smell not real bad just get a woof of it every now and again, have had a look under the bonet and all i can see is a greasy oil patch around the oil filter? Is this a commen problem?

Two being a slight knock coming from the rear im thinking maybe warn shocks?

Its also running one of those hks type foam mushroom filters, im guesing i should ditch this?

And thats about all for now, im very happy with how it goes alot quicker than the old starlet lol 8)

All the 16v 4ages I've had leak oil out the dizzy, drops onto the exhaust manifold and smells like the car is on fire, only takes one drop of oil to smell real bad. It'll burn off after a while though, until the next drip

Yeah il do an oil and filter change soon see if i can spot anything.

Also it tends to idle quite high sometimes it can be as high as 1500-1600rpm or drops to around 1000rpm, any ideas on what this could be?

look before you take the filter off
removing the filter on those drops oil in exactly the place you need to look to see if its leaking. so if you take the filter off first, you wont be able to tell if its leaking

Re your idle-does the temp sit low on the open road? if so thermostat requires replacing.that lets the computer turn off cold fast idle. For the rattle in the back .I think its the sway bar bushes go on these, someone will correct me,it is a common fault on these cars.

me agree, with swaybar bushes and the oil leak change the filter -try and use a genuine filter as aftermarket ones tend to leak and wash it down and keep an eye out to see if it still leaks

its not the filter that leaks, while its possible it could be, there are orings in the filter housing that leak

Sweet that is exactly the problem with the fast idle it does run cold on the open road i thought that was a bit weird aswell.
Il have a good look to see where the oil is coming from it looks to be around the filter housing which would make sence with the burning smell aswell as it is above the exhaust.
Will check the sway bar bushes aswell, i gues it would be a good time to upgrade to some nolathane ones?

On an ae101 I had the O ring seals went on the oilfilter adaptor plate and it started leaking. The seals are cheap and pretty easy to replace when doing a filter change
