i'm guessing you drive like a saint??
cos anything that is louder will only justify an excuse to 'have a chat' if you are one with a blue uniform.

Ditch the cat and get a 2/1/4 inch (dont go any bigger) mandrel bent exhaust all the way thru, use two resonators in the straight section and a superturbo or flowmaster rear muffler (not a cannon or straight thru type one) at the rear.

Keep your factory parts for if you have warrant issues.

Sell your cat to a scrappy for $50+ to help cover costs.

Cheers,

John

+1 for getting it done at a decent exhaust place, shop around and get some quotes, ask if they have the equipment to test the noise and make sure you're under the limit when it's done. I got mine done a few years back before all the laws changed, got pulled up a couple of weeks back and the cop did a roadside test, which I failed, got green stickered, now I have to go get the cert I've been putting off getting, and pay $90 for vtnz to check over the car after that to remove the sticker. Expensive and inconvenient lesson.

I would second this, a bigger o/d exhaust is the best way to go. if you piss around with a muffler it will sound like crap and raspy, a bigger exhaust should give you a deeper note instead of a higher note. Am I right? You may be able to buy a second hand one already made, if you want to keep costs down.

My n/a levin has a 2.5" through with 1 resonator and toyota muffler, not bad for a 1600.

My BZ Touring was extremely quiet with the factory exhaust.
Had the cat removed and a resonator put in place and it made a noticeable difference.

No drone sound here, deeper sound at idle and a growl when accelerating.

U'm ..... SNAP

You could take out the cat pretty cheaply, but to make it sound good you need - as people have said - to increase the id of the pipe, get a decent resonator in the middle and have something other than a cannon as the main muffler. You can use a cannon so long as you are prepared to spend mega dollars on it and don't skimp on the resonator. Otherwise they will sound like ass and you will get pulled up and ticketed whereas the expensive system won't have the high frequency rattle so common to smaller capacity motors.
