Do any GT starlet's have an lsd box?

Postby crispy'86 » Fri Aug 28, 2009 7:42 am

Just contemplating the idea of having a cheap option of an lsd box for my race car, and wondering if any of the gt starlets have lsd's from factory? And then maybe putting the lsd unit into one of my c series boxes (C52/56)

Some (read: not many) come with a factory viscous unit but they're rubbish. Only other option is aftermarket.

C56 lsd unit will fit into a C52. From memory they came out in some AE101's and AE111's. But like Stu said, they are rubbish. I had one but opted for the TRD unit instead.

I thought they were torsen, and torsen being torsen is very smooth, I would not say rubbish.

i think the starlet lsds were viscous and the corolla/levin/truueno lsds were torsen

throw a shim or 3 in there and they're not too bad

starlet has a viscous which are annoying cause the driveshafts are special... plus they are crap LSD.

C56 lsd from an ae1XX is torsen are are mint. i use one in my aw11.. if you are running a series engine just do a complete c56 swap. fwd setup is easy and all you have to do is change the starter and back plate.

Aha so lots of good replies about the starlet lsd. Interesting the starlet unit being different and rubbish, of course i was hoping they'd be an alright unit to use as i know the c56's with lsd's can fetch reaonably high prices for the box.
So much for having a low budget race car if i get an lsd from a c series box

viscous ones wont fit a normal c series think the housing is a little dif? see all the c series aftermarket lsd's can work in ep's except those that have the std viscous, unless its due to the different shafts

If its only the case that ends up being different I have the C56 case from the donor gearbox I scored that had the viscous lsd in it you can have for cheap as.

Viscous ones in the starlets are all good with a shim or 2. People only say they're rubbish because all the ones they've experienced are ~20 years old.

how do you shim a viscous diff?
and how do they wear out? does the fluid go "off"?

you can shim any dif.. doesnt make it lock up any better i think your confusing clutch packs with viscous, its mainly changing the fluid which cures them but they are shittastic to begin with

Viscous LSDs are less efficient than mechanical types, that is, they "lose" some power. They do not stand up well to abuse. In particular, any sustained load which overheats the silicone results in sudden permanent loss of the differential effect.[4] They do have the virtue of failing gracefully, reverting to semi-open differential behaviour. Typically a visco-differential that has covered 60,000 miles or more will be functioning largely as an open differential

wiki ftw

you will find if you dont use a torsen it will just tq sledge everywhere on a FWD, torsen c56 lsd the way to go...

also if you break a driveshaft theres no just "pop another one in"

running normal gear oil is also a bonus. as aposed to needing LSD oil which is rediculously priced

Mine seemed to "lock up" a whole lot better when I added an extra shim in it. Felt like new again and was way more consistent. No I'm not confusing clutch pack LSD's with viscous LSD's - Unless starlet's and MR2's come with clutch pack LSD's stock...

mr2s do have viscous diffs as far as i know they are helical/torsen

AW's/ZZW's may have helical/torsen but SW's (like Starlets) either have an open diff or a viscous coupling. Viscous LSD's aren't as bad as people make them out to be.
