over heated engine tell tale signs

Postby gleem » Tue Sep 15, 2009 12:02 am

have a b18c engine and manual box to sell and want to know if its a runner etc, turns over fine, When i removed the spark plugs the ceramic at the bottom was all charred and got me worried so i removed the rocker covers and all is in good condition, cant see any cracking on the head, Tomorrow will be taking sump off for a look, To say a bearing was on the way out and thats why the motor was removed can you sell by looking? and also gear boxes how can you check, Does any body know what these parts are worth?

I'm assuming you mean there was slight blacking on the plugs? That really means nothing at all. And you're not going to see a crack in a head from removing the rocker cover.

Sump off and bearing caps off will give you an idea of the state of the bearings.

Cant really check gearbox short of stripping it. Either try it in a car, or see what the oil is like. But again, the oil could look mint and it coiuld have gear teeth floating around inside anyway

i was looking for cracking around the out side and it looked a bit more than slight blacking, looked like it got very hot, maybe 5-7 mill of charing around the base and its not surface carbon as ive tried cleaning

you cant see cracks in the head with just your eyes, they use crack inhibiting dye's that glow to do the job, you could pressure test the head if you get lucky, there was even a diy pressure tester on the net that i want to find again,

sell it as a mystery box :?:

i think you mean the ceramic section just above where the hex section is? if so its pretty common for that to get discolored on plugs that have been in use for a while. nothing to get alarmed about.

if you want to get serious about checking its condition check the bearings etc, and get a leakdown test down. but mostly people are only going to care about the kms
