4A / 7A-GTE Sparkplugs, which?

Postby thegreatestben » Wed Sep 16, 2009 9:44 pm

What sparkplugs is everyone running in there turbo a's?

Speedtech told me I "needed" these fancy HKS plugs. Two of which are now cracked. They're a bit expensive and I can't buy them from anyone except them pretty much.

Interested to know what everyone else is using/has been recommended.

NGK's would be great cos I can buy them from work :D

dont see why denso or NGK won't be ok, bet they have made more plugs for race cars than HKS

Yeah HKS ones are just denso.
The HKS ones I've got are heat Range 9 iridiums general fitment.
They have this type of tip

I just want to use something more readily available

Found the NGK equivalent of the HKS ones I've got.

Hks = R45i
Denso = Ik-0127
NGK = R7234-9

Will probably go with the NGK

Thats weird, they suggested using the cheapy $5 plugs to me and I've had no problems. Just replace them more often than the expensive stuff. Pretty sure they are NGK but they were an obscure one that most places didn't have in stock plus had to regap them.

I'm sure there is a reason to suggesting HKS, other than being a supplier...

I'll find out the plug type tonight if I get a chance.

What head are you running & are you using the standard HT Leads etc? NGK BKR7E would be a good place to start. Big port use BCPR7E. The only difference is they're 2.5mm longer from the seat to the terminal.

If you want to go down the iridium route then BKR7EIX or Denso IK22 would be the go. If you need to go to a colder heat range then just use the next number higher i.e. 8, 9 & 24, 27

on my 4agte tune STM used an NGK 8 heat range from memory.

it was a bloody cold plug though, and fouled very easily, and cold starting was a bitch. I always had a set of stock silvertop NGK6 around for when it didnt want to start.

I bought a set of BKR7E's what a difference!
So much easier to start and just runs better all round.

I priced up the NGK Racing plugs.
$235 retail each!!!

Thought I'd pass on those :D
I emailed speedtech last night but funnily enough they didn't reply.
Might go see them next week :evil:

Might need something a bit fancier for running the mad boosts its gonna run eventually but for now the 7's appear to be grouse (and only $13.50 a set 8) )

I used to use BCR8ES plugs. Really cheap like $2.XX something. Just gapped them down a little and they were perfect.

We then found out there was a better plug which was more resistant to fouling up. It was a similar part # to what you have above RXXX but with a heat range 8.

I think 9 is a bit too cold for the boost you are running they will easily foul up. I used heat range 8 with 98 pump gas on 27psi with no issues.
