have replaced the sump gasket on the silvertop 20v.

Was recommended by a friend to use a torque wrench to do the sump bolts up to spec to ensure not overly tight.

Borrowed a torque wrench from a friend, checked with gf that the pressure was correct etc. (first time using one)

Did up half of the sump bolts, seemed to be going too tight but reassured through the manuals specs + wrenchs superior ability etc.. .. with the torque wrench 'clicking' as my friend described it would...

the next bolt (which happens to be one of the studs) falls down on my face.

the torque wrench was NOT clicking. it was the bolts snapping. To top it off the half snapped is the end where the fly wheel is.

Really in deep sh*t.

Options
(1) attempt to drill them out (wtf happens with the stud? is it a stud for a reason ie has something 'undrillable' above?)
(2) take the sump off and hope they have left a resdue at the top of the bolt heads to use vice grips on?
(3) try 'freeze' on the bolts first?

Too gutted/ angry to look it at the moment.. after all would have been fine how it was!!! FU*K!

gutted to hear,

the studs have a thread, that the studs themselves screw into, same thread as the bolts. I snapped one of my studs (but my motor was out of the car), i managed to get the stud out and put a bolt in.

The studs are just to help line up the sump up/help put it on.

Those bolts always snap when over tightened. Ive seen it happen, you can leave it providing the surrounding bolts are done up. It shouldnt leak.

not when its half of them in a row.. its ok have calmed down abit, managed to drill one though (very small drill bit, very fast electric drill) and loosen it enough to get it out (used a hand drill, old school style to create a 'bite' then use its strength to loosen/ unscrew the bolt).

very relieved though! just going to take time to fix

heh gf will be sleeping outside though!

Or when wound right down to some low torque setting, it ends up not 'clicking' at any setting at all, as it's fallen out of it's usable range.

I remember also finding this out the hard way at some point, cant remember how/why though.

Probably because I've made so many stupid decisions that they've all started to blur into one

For small diameter bolts you should be using a small torque wrench, anything bigger than 3/8" drive is too big ;)

Wow so you really did go by the theory "torque them till they snap, then half a turn back" (or similar) Just add the half turn backwards and they should be sweet

bad luck though :(

those little m6 sump bolts/nuts should really be done up with a 1/4 inch ratchet that way you cant over tighten them unless you go silly.

yeas as above, torque wrenches dont like low settings, snapped a cam cap bolt with a torque wrench once...
if youve got heaps to take out, it may pay to invest in some ezy outs.. you just drill a hole in the bolt then winds in the ezy out (it has a reverse therd) and the bolts should just wind out

good luck

pretty much exactly how I've been using a hand drill, should be ok.

Well... its pretty embarrassing.. misread the diagram red pounds instead of inch pounds?

yep. 12 x odd the force etc? ek!

best part is they were probably fine how they were before I started with the torque wrench = massive waste of time!

where do ya get ezyouts from/ how much do they cost approx?

you would be surprised how many ppl have done that when they are learning. I know I have!
look at it this way, you have learned something!
either:
how to use a torque wrench, or:
to leave shit alone :P

As a rule doesn't gf involvement multiply the time to perform task by roughly 3.24?
