twincharger setup

Postby 79rolla » Tue Oct 13, 2009 3:18 pm

hey, this is just an idea iv thort up for a 1uz twin charge setup

Image

id have the vortex clutched so it is completely disengaged one the turbos spool up past whatever its boosting (say 8psi) and have a flapper ( one way valve) in the system to reduce lag on the supercharger (so it doesn't have to pressurize the whole system and prevents turbo compressor surge (in theory at least) and once the supercharger is disengaged it would reduce work on the engine and the flap would prevent boost leaking out the supercharger (compressor surge)

the flap may need to be replaced by 2 one way valves depending on how good of a seal could be produced by the flap

hope all that makes scents.

thoughts? would it work?

that won't fit in your KE :P

The theory would work. Making it work would be doable but would probably involve a bit of experimentation and altering as you go

Can't see why not, however getting a flapper valve that's large enough but still keeps a good seal under 10+ psi of boost would be the tricky part.

Would have to be a built motor running serious power to be worth the effort imo.

Bah just get an Eaton M90 roots blower, and blow the turbos into that bad boy compound style. Have the roots blower running at a 1.5 ratio so its not generating too much heat but still effectively makes the 1UZ behave like a 6litre spooling and ingesting from the turbos. Use a pair of GT3582Rs and have yourself an extremely driveable car capable of over 1000hp....

Or, just get a pair of GT2860Rs and not aim for more power than the 1UZ can handle in the first place and have no perceptible lag. Also, one more thing I'd do if twin turboing a V8 - most (inc. 1uz) are cross plane - I reckon use twin scroll turbos to divide the pulses so you don't have collisions in each collector. Should reduce turbine pressure a lot and improve spool that bit more.

I'd class that as tri-charged, not twin-charged.

Looks like a cool concept.
The eaton idea sounds pretty sweet. The positive displacement supercharger now making the motor "seem" bigger displacement to start with, then the turbos kick you in the ar$e and away you go.

I wouldn't go with a Vortex SC, as its a centrifugal SC. You want a positive displacement SC to kick in from the get go.

Centrifugal has to get up to a certain rotational speed to be effective, whereas a positive displacement SC produces the same amount of output air per revolution.
You'll get quicker turbo spooling with a roots or twin screw type SC
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Cool idea, but I have to ask, why?

Just sounds a bit OTT. It would be mint no doubt, but would the cost / hassle be worth it compared to just slapping on a supercharger?

that's a good point, hadint quite thought that bit through...

its just a concept iv got atm.. and yeas i could make it fit in a ke(35)

if i did do it i would do some internail work to make sure it could handle it.

iv had this playing on my mind for about 6 months now... some nights i cant sleep just thinking about it... i really want to do it... but cant atm

why? if you can its because you can... the point of it is just to be over the top.. for the fun of it... then sell it after it try's to kill you one time too many

i cant see much if any change out of 10k, i men just the manifolds on TM are like 2k plus SC 1500+, would add up super fast, then you will need to tub the read on a KE to fit big enough rubber to actually be able to drive it.

that N/A with NOS ke35 runs 10s im pretty sure

Also been done in aus a fair few years back, when ae92's weren't very old infact. Think it might have been 95, guy there just kinda decided that he would slap a turbo on his gtz without ditching the supercharger. Ended up with a pretty similar setup to yours but had the roots style blower, twin filters, twin everything and just limited the charger pressure to about 4 pounds below what his wastegate was set at. Don't think he had much in the way of a one way valve, just a nice y joint where the two met and a flap in there, more pressure from one side than the other made the flap close and kept presure in, once turbo's had enough pressure up flap would open and air would mix then a bit more from the turbo flap would nearly close completely, you got to remeber that you dont want the sysytem to be completelt sealed from with side as you tend to break things that way

Here's how Bee R do it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuJEXp-EKso

Turbo blows through the supercharger.
In my opinion, not the ideal situation. Adding a lot of extra stress on the SC as well as the turbo, but they seem to get good results from it... I mean, 350hp at 4,000RPM is a pretty good result...

We ran a 1GGZE with a large T3 turbo blowing into the SC14 on it.
Blew the 1GGTE and so bought the 1GGZE as they have better pistons and rods etc, and decided to try the SC.

30PSI at 1200 rpm, had to vent the air off back to 20 psi,
made for massive wheelspin, and felt so much faster,
but severe lack of top end power as the SC could just not pass enough air for much more than what was probably around 3-400hp.

Took the SC back off and ran Turbo only again,
made the car much quicker on the circuit, but the Twincharge would be awesome for a road car.

You would have the potential for up to 3 K&N pod filters. I don't know if the 1uz could ever be built to contain such dyno proven power gains.

iv seen setups like that, they usiuly have a bypass around the suppercharger to stop it restricting flow

I've always liked the VW twincharger idea
Supercharger feeds into the turbo. As the turbo spools and now draws more air than the supercharger provides, the bypass valve opens and the supercharger declutches.
