petrol surf

Postby rollaholic » Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:22 am

the missus dad is looking at getting himself another surf after losing his work one, and hes got a couple of v6 ones on his watch list - the 93-96 kinda era... is this the infamous blown headgasket 6 found in the camrys? (1VZ-FE?)

i've seen a few of this shape get rust in the doors, any other common faults to watch out for?

any info appreciated!

Yes they are the ones famous for BHG. And usually it's buggered heads that cause it. So you can always just replace the gaskets.
where magn1t? he will actually be right in this case....

And to compound the issue, all the electrics in the V go brittle with the ehat and can fall apart when touched.
Other than that they are a surf, so no real issues.

So buy one, then slip in a 1uz 8)

Avoid the V6(3VZ-## series engine),as mentioned above they blow head gaskets often caused by corrosion on the top of the block (ask any engine reconditioner) and they drink petrol big time when are are running. Rust in front doors and top of rear door(side door) openings.Check for play in steering idler -cheap to replace if worn, also on a V6 check for noisy cambelt idler, but replacement idlers are only $39.88 at Toyota. But dont buy a 3 litre V6!!!!!

Drove a 2.7L petrol one recently.
Seemed nice, wasn't slow as I was expecting but you would probably not want to tow with it.
Avoid v6's. I like KZN models the best, except for doing oil drain/feeds on them

the rzn185's are an ok vehicle, not over induldged with power but it all depends what you are after, obviously a intercooler kzn185 would be the pick of the bunch but they are still fetching close to $15K.

185 series over the 130 series everyday

yeah im keen to get him into a KZ powered model, hes come from a late model lux with the turbo diesel (forget the engine code on the new ones) so an atmo diesel is gonna be pretty disappointing for him.

im well aware of the shortcomings of the VZ, just was not 100% sure if it was what they put into the surfs.

cheers for feedback folks
