External Waste Gates

Postby bbq1988 » Thu Oct 22, 2009 12:33 pm

Hey guys, I'm after some info on external waste gates, what size would be best etc.

I Am planning on using an external waste gate on my RB30DET Setup, with a GT35/40 (or equivalent sized) Turbo.

I Am after 375 RWKW

Would 38mm be large enough to control the boost properly? what recommendations do you have?

Cheers.

im going to be running a gt3540 (gt3582R) on my 3l 7mgte with custom manifold.
I have got a tial 44mm external, was told not to go too large.

Then again im aiming for less power than you.

More power = smaller wastegate required

If you're running ridiculous boost a 38mm would probably be fine. Turn the boost down and you could have issues. If you're spending the coin for that sort of power then I would go a bit bigger for peace of mind/flexability.

i wouldnt bother with a 38, go straight to a 50. good mate of mine is running a 26/30 with a custom borg warner 35/40 and one of the limiting factors is the 38mm gate from memory its at a detuned 380whp

Yep. If people actually bothered to read/think about how these things work then we'd have a lot less misinformation and comments such as the one below

Cheers guys, after reading that i think a 38 or 44mm would be best for response & general control of boost.

Fueling/ECU will be sorted soon but the engine will not be going into the car until next year as i also need to purchase a gearbox that wont explode!

cheers

i had a 46mm on a 400kw 2jzgte and that was unstable. i would go minimum 50mm.

If you had read the above posts you might have realised that maybe it's because 46mm was too big rather than too small.

Which means the wastegate was too large and going to a 50mm would make the problem worse

I'm not sure about that eh. Most cases I have seen where people have tried to control the described boost levels with GT3582Rs using 44mm or less wastegates have had issues with creep, one of my mates has a 1.06a/r GT3582R and he has been fighting boost creep with his 48mm wastegate using a Sinco manifold.

Since talk of waste gates, has any one used variable geometry turbo in an aftermarket application? What do they use to control turbo? ECU output to a stepper motor?
This tech makes wastegates obsolete.
