Clutch replacement in a FWD...

Postby peas » Fri Oct 23, 2009 7:18 pm

I have done many things on my cars (brakes, turbo off, turbo on, head gasket, timing belt etc) but never had the pleasure of doing a clutch. Now the time has come to get my hands dirty or pay someone to do it. So... '94 Camry 5S-FE... where the hell do I start or is this a job to pay someone with a hoist to do?

Cheers :D

Def be easier with 2 people.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I haven't got a clue really. Remove starter... remove slave cylinder and other bits attached to gearbox... whip off gearbox and disassemble clutch... pretty much it?

i think the hard bit is centering the clutch when u tighten the pressure plate, thers a cluch centering tool, but you can use other things like a turned down bit of wood
the faster u go, the quicker u get there

Did this on my corolla.

Jack up car/remove wheels
Bleed Clutch
Disconnect wires and clutch lines.
Remove tie rod ends from hub carrier
Undo suspension struts from bottom of A/Control arms
Remove CV joints
Slap a hoist on the motor and jack with wood under gearbox
Undo gbox - motor bolts
Now my corolla only has a N-S crossmember - you probably have more (actually this may change what you need to re suspension & CVs)
Drop crossmember and undo Gbox mounts
Slide Gbox off under car
Old clutch/pressure plate/bearing out,
New clutch gear in - line up with screwdriver + eye guage
Reassembly is reverse

Not sure. Its a NZ new model it that says anything... what with its wildly optimistic 220km speedo!

Thanks for all your advice... I might have a look at it this arvo and see how I go. Otherwise I guess its only 2-3 hundy in labour at a garage.
