AE101 FXGT exhaust

Postby Santa'sBoostinSleigh » Wed Nov 04, 2009 10:34 pm

well i had a climb around under Carpet Burns AE101 FXGT the other day cause shes been pestering me for ages to do something about her shitty sounding (standard apart from removed cat) exhaust

now compared to the the AE101 levins it makes things a bit more difficult as the FXGT's are shorter in the arse end.
what makes things even trickier are that she wants to stay twin exhausts...

from the rear sub-frame to the rear bumper, its only about 500mm, so this makes it really hard to actually fit something in. its just over 2m from the flexi to the rear subframe, and about 1m between the two tips at the back bumper.

what has everybody else done in this situation? any help appreciated

was thinking of going 2" all the way through (we dont want stupid amounts of noise, and its not really a huge performance machine)
other thought was possibly 2.25" up front, and into twin smaller exits (the race car is 2.25" all the way through and is probably too loud for what we want for the road car)

other ideas were putting a reso and muff in the middle section of the exhaust, and then running straight pipe to the rear, then splitting off with a Y piece to the twin tips. however am a bit concerned that long length of straight pipes after the muff/reso would end up being loud and/or droney. (would be approx 1m to the rear subframe, then the Y and 2x 90deg bends and tip (2x)

i can whip up some shitty MS paint pics if that helps?

first stupid idea that comes to mind is maybe just 1 tip with another one that's purely cosmetic? I dunno sounds like it'd save a lot of hassle ... just a thought.

my fxgt has twin cannons on the back. imo, dont do it. Its not real farty like some other 20vs, and it sounds reasonable, but its far too loud and raspy. Im not sure if there is a resonator further up the car, as the system was on it when i got it. Also havent tried it without the tip silencers, but i imagine itll make ears bleed.

You would be better off going with decent silencers, and a single tip.

heres what mine looks like

I dont know if you remember what Penny's old FX sounded like, but that was potentially 2.5" from the headers back with a resonator roughly halfway down the system, which split into 2 2" pipes with resonators at the ends of the system. Sounded really good, nice and deep but not overly loud. Was a tad droney in the backseat though.

The piping size may be reduced where it branches out to the two mufflers.

What about two 2" straight through oval mufflers if they'll fit, and a reso where the cat was?

hahahahaha saw a civic like this.... one carbon black smoking muffler and one shinny new looking one on the other side = not cool

Why don't you just put a reso in were the cat used to be or after the std center muffler.... why change the whole system if your not after gains just fix the sound from having no cat

2.25 till were it splits it goes a bit squished/flat and then into smaller pipes

problem is with rear mufflers is the length - teh standard FXGT ones are side entry due to reduced rear space.

would just chucking in a reso where the was help with killing the shitty exjhaust sound?
i believe the rear mufflers are getting pretty poked anyway
