yeah the 03 is the grade ie where it fits in the tolerances on the production line

As Warwick says, 03 a code for production line clearances, you would put an 03 piston into an 03 size bore.
The 3 next to the arrow is the size marking.

When they bore and hone the cylinder in the factory you get slight variances in the actual diameter as the tools wear...
A similar thing happens with the machining of the pistons.
To keep the clearances very close to ideal they measure and mark the block with the size. The piston is also marked.

1 is smallest
2 is the most common
3 is biggest

So a 2 size bore gets a 2 size piston etc.
You can physically put a 3 piston into a 1 size bore but it might not have enough clearance.

Look here at pages 47 - 49 to get an idea
NOTE - they are talking about 4age clearances NOT 4agze (which need more clearance)
http://home.onthenet.com.au/~paulp/Blacktop/bt4-em.pdf

4agze clearance is 0.12-0.14mm!!!

Ken
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
