How to have an exhaust that flows well for NA, and quietish?

Postby RomanV » Wed Nov 11, 2009 1:56 pm

A lot of people that I've talked to about exhausts have been insistant on a few things, like having as fewer bends as possible, using mandrel bends instead of press/crush bent sections, and going to lengths to reduce the amount of restriction imposed.

However when looking at muffler designs, sheesh!

It seems as though you go to this work to keep the exhaust energy flowing, and then pretty much totally undo all of that by making the exhaust gas turn in tight circles, or go through restrictive chambers, or whatever else, to dampen the volume.

So what's the way to go here? I dont want an overly noisy car, but dont want a POS muffler that's going to strangle my motor to death.

I wouldnt mind it being loud, if not for the fact that NA motors like mine with noisy exhausts sound freaken horrible.

Are there any particular brands or methods which acheive a 'best of both worlds' scenario for a high strung NA motor?

I dont have much room to fit a muffler either, if that helps

flowmaster or a good copy like a forza flow they do a really good job on getting things quiet without restricting and have been used in many high hp v8s and the likes

Use thick wall pipe. You can get straight through mufflers which work quite well, but not the cheapest of things.

Like above, thick wall pipe, also i've used a promuff on my trueno - quite expensive but flowed well and when used in conjunction with a decent resonator worked quite well. I reckon get your resonator as far back down the car as possible, seems to help quiten it down more without strangling it. Don't go for a massive tip, the smallest tip you can get away with the better, a few years ago alot of the older rotor crowd had tips that actually got smaller from where they came out of the muffler, most of them when i asked them about it said it got rid of the higher pitch resonance they were getting - took the sharp edge off the sound so to speak

Flowmaster is value for money from STA parts. Does the job without restricting the flow. I put one on my straight exhaust on my starlet, and yes even though it's turbo it quietened it down and cops stopped looking at me but the performance was still there. Best $78 I spent on my exhaust
