Tapping noise Blacktop

Postby BZR4AGE » Mon Dec 14, 2009 9:22 pm

Was doing some track time during the weekend at Hemptons Down.

After the third session when I was going into the pit slowly, I've notice a strange tapping noise.

Parked in the pit, popped the bonnet, and there is a tapping noise around the head. Came from in between the throttle bodies, head and injectors. I don't think is a metallic sound or anything...almost sounded like injector ticking noise but 1000x louder.

Have pulled apart the rocker cover, everything seems fine, drained all the oil, couldn't find any trace of metal or bearing at all.

What should I try next? drop the sump? or take off the whole head. I am kind of a newbie, but I thought I want to give it a try finding the issue first (good learning experience I think), then get a engine builder to fit it back together for me.

Carefully cut the oil filter open and inspect for bearing material etc.

Have you got new injectors?
I put larger injectors in my car and it makes similar noises
Don't know why.

I think he is running adjustable cam gears both inlet and exhaust, so no VVT

Will cut the filter tomorrow!

Yes, no VVT, full engine built with Toda parts, silvertop shotpeaned rods, arp bolts etc.

Not new injectors

Perhaps a bolt/stone inside of inlet bouncing off valves?

It could be a loose bolt? but the tapping noise was in a pattern, so I don't think it will be it. and it dosen't happen throughout the whole rev range. only happens between 2-5k rpm..and goes away after that, hence why i didn't notice it during the track as I was contantly above 5k rpm, and only found out as i was warming down.

the adjustable cam wheels are not loose in the adjustment?

Check the valve clearances before you pull it too far apart.
