Faulty oil pressure gauge

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Sun Jan 10, 2010 8:59 pm

The oil pressure gauge in my KE25 has recently started reading 100psi constantly, as soon as the key is switched on it jumps to 100psi. Its been working fine for the last year and this just randomly happened during a 50km drive.

It is an Autometer (yes, I know) gauge and sender, I'm 99% sure the wiring is OK as I've checked and rechecked it, and even rangi-wired it up with new wiring.

Is a faulty gauge or sender likely to cause this? And is there any way to check the sender? Should there be a specific resistance / ohme reading I can check or anything??

Cheers
-Matt

Got a pic of what sort of gauge and sender it is? I've got a few lying around I can test to give you some readings if you want.

would be awesome if you could!
its just the standard 2 5/8" electrical gauge, with standard sender.

Slightly OT:
That brass T connector WILL crack eventually.

Yeah, had the thread crack off in the head on my 3S-GE, saw the pool of oil when leaving the drive way, otherwise I would have been stuffed. Then had to remove a water line and use a square easy out type thing to remove it, that was a time consuming mistake.

disconnect the wiring at the sender unit, and test it,
usually by jumping to the max limit it indicates a short to ground, either the sender unit itself or in the wire

Have heard that quite a few times now, keep planning on changing it. Will try to do it before I regret it  Is it just the fact its brass, or is it the way its mounted full stop?

done that and it all seemed fine, which is also why I rangi-wired it up just to make sure the wiring wasn't faulty. only two wires on the sender, one an earth which is earthed properly, the other is the sender wire to the gauge which has a good continuity to the gauge and not earthing out anywhere. the sender body itself is earthed out, but neither terminals are (with wiring disconnected)

checked the ohmes on the sender and can't get a reading. but also noticed the gauge reads 100psi whether the sender wiring is connected or not. all that needs to be connected is 12v+ and the earth on the gauge, and it'll read 100psi. is that normal with the sender disconnected??

oh and its an AutoGAUGE, not Autometer as I said above  Get what you pay for I guess
